Cultivating Women, Cultivating Science

An exploration of the contributions of women to the field of botany before and after the dawn of the Victorian Age. It shows how ideas about botany as a leisure activity for self-improvement and a "feminine" pursuit gave women opportunities to publish their findings in periodicals.

Collecting Ladies

Around 1870, Ferdinand von Mueller, the greatest Australian botanist of the nineteenth century, began to advertise in several newspapers across Australia for 'lady' plant collectors. This was at a time when women typically had little recourse to science, or contact with men outside their circle of friends, making Mueller's network of ladies quite extraordinary. Collecting Ladies profiles 14 of Mueller's coterie of women collectors. Included are Fanny Charsley, Louisa Atkinson, Annie Walker and Ellis Rowan for whom Mueller made time to assist in pursuit of their own passions. He identified the plants they painted and provided letters of introduction to publishers and scientists. Together, these ladies produced some of the most beautiful books and botanical art to come out of Australia in the nineteenth century, covering all the Australian colonies.

"Botany was considered a suitable pursuit for young women in the 19th century until it was noticed that flowers, the biggest attraction for most ladies, were the sexual organs of plants. Certain males of that time believed that the female mind would be corrupted by observing such items and attempted to prevent women from studying botany. Fortunately botany as a pursuit for women persisted. The women chronicled in this book had an interest in orchids before expanding into the wider world of plants. They corresponded with professional botanists and increased their knowledge. None of them had access to the books published today. Terri Allen has done a great service in reminding us of the persistence, the energy, the communication, illustration and educative skills and the intelligence of women who have recorded the Gippsland flora and who fought to conserve the plant communities they described."

Ladies' Botany

The horticulturalist John Lindley (1799-1865) worked for Sir Joseph Banks, and was later instrumental in saving the Royal Horticultural Society from financial disaster. He was a prolific author of works for gardening practitioners but also for a non-specialist readership, and many of his books have been reissued in this series. The first volume of this two-volume work was published in 1834, and the second in 1837. At a time when botany was regarded as the only science suitable for study by women and girls, Lindley felt that there was a lack of books for 'those who would become acquainted with Botany as an amusement and a relaxation', and attempted to meet this need. The first volume, in the form of engaging letters to a lady, was originally intended to stand alone. Illustrated with detailed botanical drawings, it schools the student in botanical form and taxonomy as well as nomenclature.

The story of nineteenth-century science often tells a tale of a masculinized professionalizing domain. Scientific man increasingly pushed women out, marginalized them and constructed them as naturally feminine creatures incapable of intellectual work, particularly scientific work. Yet many women participated in various scientific endeavours throughout the century. This work asks why, when the waters were so inviting, did women dive deeply into the swirling maelstrom of scientific practice, scientific controversies and scientific writing? Victorian women certainly recognised that male naturalists were not always willing to welcome them warmly into their inner sanctum of scientific work honour...
