Xavante (Glottocode: xava1240) is an indigenous language located in Central Brazil, with approximately 15,315 Xavante speakers dispersed throughout six Brazilian indigenous lands. The variety focused on in this thesis is located within the villages Ẽtênhiritipá and Wede'rã in the Pimentel Barbosa Indigenous Land in the state of Mato Grosso. Novel fieldwork data collection reveals that Xavante exhibits typologically unusual linguistic features, including the absence of velar consonants and, even stranger, the disallowance of non-labial codas, raising questions about the markedness hierarchy, and particularly the status of labials in the absence of other places of articulation.

Mapping Time, Space and the Body: Indigenous Knowledge and Mathematical Thinking in Brazil brings people, land and numbers together in the fight for justice. On this extraordinary voyage through ancestral territories in central and southern Brazil, the Xavante, Suyá, Kayabi, and other local nations use mapping as a tool to protect their human rights to lands and resources they have traditionally owned and acquired. Mathematics activities inside the classroom and in everyday life help explain how Indigenous Peoples understand the cosmos and protect the living beings that helped create it. The book is a welcome contribution to a growing literature on the mathematical and scientific thinking o...

Nominalization in Languages of the Americas

Recent scholarship has confirmed earlier observations that nominalization plays a crucial role in the formation of complex constructions in the world’s languages. Grammatical nominalizations are one of the most salient and widespread features of languages of the Americas, yet they have not been approached as foundational grammatical structures for constructions such as relative clauses and complement clauses. This is due to an imbalance in past scholarship, which has tended to focus on these constructions at the expense of the nominalization structures underlying them. The papers in this collection treat grammatical nominalizations in their own right, and as a starting point for the invest...
