Current Approaches to Limits and Areas in Dialectology
Defining the geographical space of linguistic variation and drawing the areal distribution of linguistic variants are classical issues in dialectology. Over recent decades, advances in geolinguistic methods, along with new trends in the study of linguistic variation, have significantly shaped new ways of approaching limits and areas in dialectology. This volume is at the crossroads of recent methodological and conceptual developments in dialectology and brings together contributions offering an unusual panorama of case studies from Basque, Romance, Germanic, Celtic, and Slavic languages. The seventeen chapters in this volume address a wide spectrum of issues exploring new approaches to the interplay of dialect areas and time and society (Part I), current quantitative methods of studying dialect limits (Part II), and linguistic geovariation focused on lexical, prosodic, syntactic or morphosyntactic topics (Part III). One of the unique features of the volume is the important collection of contributions addressing issues of dialect syntax, a recent and rapidly growing field of linguistic research.

No one anticipated in 1958 that in the midst of a remarkable prosperity, Cuba would fall into Communism. It seemed impossible that an island 90 miles from the US, the most powerful Capitalistic country in the planet, could turn Communist. Yet in two years it happened, at the cost of hundreds of lives, thousands of exiles, the eradication of free press, freedom of speech, private education, freedom of worship and private property. Now, everything belonged to the government, all Cubans had to ask permission to travel abroad, if they left, they could not return. The government decided what foods they could eat, where they had to live, what professions they could practice and what jobs were open to them. This book presents the history of how it happened, how it got started and the deceit and the treachery that made it possible. Cuba has not recovered its lost freedoms after 60 plus years of Communism... and probably never will. Great lesson for anyone sympathetic with Marxism or the radical left.

Die Buchreihe ‚Patronymica Romanica’ ist das Publikationsorgan des Forschungsprojekts ‚Dictionnaire historique de l’anthroponymie romane’, als dessen Ergebnis sukzessive das gleichnamige Wörterbuch in 6 Bänden erscheint. Neben den namenskundlichen Quellen (Steuer- und Melderegister) werden v.a. Studien aus dem weiten Feld der wissenschaftlichen Beschäftigung mit den Familiennamen im Besonderen und den Personennamen im Allgemeinen publiziert.
