"Real advances in understanding geology for mineral, energy and groundwater resource potential of the Australian continent will come from unveiling what lies at depth, especially in the extensive under-explored regions that are obscured by cover. In this context, airborne electromagnetics (AEM) is a geophysical method at the forefront in addressing the challenge of exploration undercover. In collaboration with the state and territory geological surveys, Geoscience Australia has led a national initiative whose goal is to acquire AEM data at 20 km line spacing across Australia. This initiative, AusAEM, represents the world's largest AEM survey flown to date; it has covered ~2.5 million km2, a substantial part of northern Australia, and is providing new insights in areas that have not been extensively explored. Regional models of subsurface electrical conductivity derived from AusAEM data support a range of applications that include geological mapping, mineral and petroleum exploration, watershed management and environmental studies." -- Online abstract.

"Effective mineral, energy and groundwater resource management and exploration rely on accurate geological maps. While geological maps of the surface exist and increase in resolution, maps of the subsurface are sparse, and the underpinning geological and geophysical constraints are disordered or non-existent. The Estimates of Geological and Geophysical Surfaces (EGGS) database seeks to enable robust subsurface geological mapping by establishing an ordered collection of precious geological and geophysical interpretations of the subsurface. EGGS stores the depth to geological boundaries derived from boreholes as well as interpretations of depth to magnetic top assessments, airborne electromagn...

"The AusAEM1 survey is the world's largest airborne electromagnetic survey flown to date, extending across an area exceeding 1.1 million km2 over Queensland and the Northern Territory. Approximately 60 000 line kilometres of data were acquired at a nominal line spacing of 20 km. Using this dataset, we interpreted the depth to chronostratigraphic surfaces, assembled stratigraphic relationship information, and delineated structural and electrically conductive features. Our results improved understanding of upper-crustal geology, led to 3D mapping of palaeovalleys, prompted further investigation of electrical conductors and their relationship to structural features and mineralisation, and helpe...

"Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) data can be acquired cost-effectively, safely and efficiently over large swathes of land. Inversion of these data for subsurface electrical conductivity provides a regional geological framework for water resources management and minerals exploration down to depths of ~200 m, depending on the geology. However, for legacy reasons, it is not uncommon for multiple deterministic inversion models to exist, with differing details in the subsurface conductivity structure. This multiplicity presents a non-trivial problem for interpreters who wish to make geological sense of these models. In this article, we outline a Bayesian approach, in which various spatial location...

"Salinity of groundwater directly affects its suitability for different uses, including human consumption, stock water, agricultural use, and mineral or energy extraction. Traditionally, direct measurements of groundwater salinity at monitoring bores that intersect an aquifer have been used to map the spatial distribution of groundwater salinity. However, drilling is a logistically and economically challenging task, and we are usually left with a sparse set of measurements from which to infer groundwater salinity over large spatial extents. Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) sounding provides a solution to this problem. This is because AEM can be flown rapidly and cost-effectively over large swa...
