The book you are holding presents a selection of paintings by my beloved wife, Yvonne Palka, interwoven with my photographs. It is an expression of our love of beauty and art, of our devotion to nature, of our spiritual search, and of our shared journey of sixty years. This book was conceived from a creative thought that Yvonne had in the summer of 2019-that she and I should hang a joint show at the Whidbey Art Gallery on Whidbey Island, Washington, of which she had long been a member. With her passing later that year, the show became impossible. The book is my own expression of Yvonne's vision. I have sought in these pages to bring together those of Yvonne's paintings that most express her warm, joyous, loving, and uplifting spirit. I complement these images with photographs that resonate with the paintings in one way or another-sometimes in form, sometimes in color, and always in spirit. Yvonne is no longer here to lend her physical voice, but the spirit that first imagined such a project has continued to be with it ever since.I see this book as an expression of our lives together.

Dragon Fire, Ocean Mist

On the wild ocean coast of Washington State you'll find enormous sea stacks at Point of Arches, Shi Shi Beach. The rocks loom high and dark over the water, like the backs of ancient mythical creatures. When Jaxon and Allie encounter the Shi Shi dragon, they are quickly befriended by the whole dragon family. But no one is safe from the thieving, temperamental dragon Zorg and his strange brood. Allie and Jaxon will need all the ingenuity they can muster--as well as the help of Niji, the dragon foundling--to defeat the dark-winged Zorg and restore peace to Shi Shi Beach.

Learning to Eat Along the Way

When Margaret Bendet is told to interview an Indian holy man, she thinks it’s just another assignment—but after speaking with him, she decides to accompany him back to his ashram, hoping to find enlightenment. In Learning to Eat Along the Way, Bendet enters a world that many have wondered about but few have seen: the milieu of a spiritual master. Subtle experiences prompt her to embark on this journey with “the swami,” as she calls the holy man, and to enter into the ashram—but once there, she deals with a host of psychological issues, including intense infatuation and life-threatening anorexia. “Each person comes to the ashram in order to receive something,” the swami tells her, “something to take with you when you leave—something you can eat along the way.” Bendet finds this to be truer than she could have imagined. Clear-eyed and candid, Learning to Eat Along the Way is an honest and often surprising account of one woman’s experience with spiritual work.
