The Local Configuration of New Research Fields
This new Yearbook addresses the question of how policy, place, and organization are made to matter for a new research field to emerge. Bringing together leading historians, sociologists, and organizational researchers on science and technology, the volume answers this question by offering in-depth case studies and comparative perspectives on multiple research fields in their nascent stage, including molecular biology and materials science, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology. The Yearbook brings to bear the lessons of constructivist ethnography and the “practice turn” in Science and Technology Studies (STS) more broadly on the qualitative, comparative, and critical inquiry of new research fields. In doing so, it offers unprecedented insights into the complex interplay of national research policies, regional clusters, particular research institutions, and novel research practices in and for any emerging field of (techno-)science. It systematically investigates national and regional differences, including the variable mobilization of such differences, and probes them for organizational topicality and policy relevance.

Journalism, Science and Society
Analyzing the role of journalists in science communication, this book presents a perspective on how this is going to evolve in the twenty-first century. The book takes three distinct perspectives on this interesting subject. Firstly, science journalists reflect on their ‘operating rules’ (science news values and news making routines). Secondly, a brief history of science journalism puts things into context, characterising the changing output of science writing in newspapers over time. Finally, the book invites several international journalists or communication scholars to comment on these observations thereby opening the global perspective. This unique project will interest a range of readers including science communication students, media studies scholars, professionals working in science communication and journalists.
The Economic Value of Spanish
The growing economic entity of Spanish as a language of international communication, serves as a starting point for an extensive study which has been promoted since 2006 by Fundación Telefónica under the broad heading: ‘The Economic Value of Spanish: a Multinational Business’. This book is the culmination of the first phase of this investigation. Intended as a conclusion to the previous instalments (9 books have preceded it), this work, as well as evaluating and recapping the main contributions previously discussed, includes, as a corollary, considerations on how to design a policy in relation to the international impact of Spanish.
The Politics of Chemistry
Agust Nieto-Galan argues that chemistry in the twentieth century was deeply and profoundly political. Far from existing in a distinct public sphere, chemical knowledge was applied in ways that created strong links with industrial and military projects, and national rivalries and international endeavours, that materially shaped the living conditions of millions of citizens. It is within this framework that Nieto-Galan analyses how Spanish chemists became powerful ideological agents in different political contexts, from liberal to dictatorial regimes, throughout the century. He unveils chemists' position of power in Spain, their place in international scientific networks, and their engagement in fierce ideological battles in an age of extremes. Shared discourses between chemistry and liberalism, war, totalitarianism, religion, and diplomacy, he argues, led to advancements in both fields.

En este volumen, que incluye las intervenciones de los profesores Jean-Claude Corbeil, Marcelo Diki-Kidiri y Luis Fernando Lara en el seminario de terminología de la I Escuela de Verano de Terminología organizada por el Instituto Universitario de Lingüística Aplicada de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra, se habla claramente de las falacias e inconsistencias de la uniformización, que se presenta como un estadio natural de comportamiento, ya que ni la visión del mundo, ni siquiera la del mundo especializado, no es uniforme, ni las situaciones sociopolíticas en las que se desarrolla el trabajo terminológico no son idénticas.
