This book refutes the thesis of Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations. Instead, it supports the Alliance of Civilizations supervised by the United Nations. It describes religious-historical and cultural monuments in the region including Istanbul Cibali-Fener-Balat-Ayvansaray where three monotheistic religions live together under the peaceful conditions and they practice their religions. The thesis of Alliance of Civilizations has been examined theoretically within the context of the book. Also the added CD at the back side of the book presents visual information about the issue. We hope that thesis of the Alliance of Civilizations, co-chaired by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero under the umbrella of the United Nations, will make considerable contribution to the world peace.
Ways to Modernity in Greece and Turkey
This is a clear and original examination of the impact of modernity on Greece and Turkey, and the influence of the West on these former states of the Ottoman Empire during the crucial hundred years between 1850 and 1950. "Ways to Modernity in Greece and Turkey" explores the reactions and coping mechanisms displayed in both societies in reaction to Europe's all-pervasive influence. Elites in both societies engaged in defensive modernization, culminating in parallel attempts to mould their nations in line with the western blueprint. The authors examine reforms in the legal regime, the changing nature of family and gender relations, and re-engineered conceptions of space and the built environment. They describe and analyse different aspects of the changes in the two societies over this period, as they defined their practices and identities against Europe, and often against each other.

Migrating to America
Why do so many Turkish migrants choose to make their fortune in America when the proximity of Europe makes it a less costly risk? Here Lisa DiCarlo offers us new insights into the study of identity and migration. She draws on research and the history of the Black Sea region going back to the early years of the modern Turkish Republic, to explain current Turkish labour migration trends.The forced ethnic migration between Greece and Turkey at the end of the Ottoman Empire stripped the Black Sea region of its artisans and merchants, weakening the economy and resulting in a trend of migration from this area. Through extensive field research Lisa DiCarlo reveals the kinship between Greeks and Turks originally from the Black Sea region. She argues current transnational chain migration from this area is led by regional identity over ethnicity. This strong regional bond leads Turkish migrants from the Black Sea region to follow Greek Black Sea migrants across the Atlantic to America, rather than their Turkish compatriots to Europe.
