Romantic Irony

This is the first collaborative international reading of irony as a major phenomenon in Romantic art and thought. The volume identifies key predecessor moments that excited Romantic authors and the emergence of a distinctly Romantic theory and practice of irony spreading to all literary genres. Not only the influential pioneer German, British, and French varieties, but also manifestations in northern, eastern, and southern parts of Europe as well as in North America, are considered. A set of concluding “syntheses” treat the shaping power of Romantic irony in narrative modes, music, the fine arts, and theater – innovations that will deeply influence Modernism. Thus the cross-cultural and i...

Whenever different social strata, religious communities, ethnic groups or nations were to be united in one political movement or in one state in Eastern Europe, the initiators usually appealed to their purported "brotherliness". Various overarching common traits were invoked, different traditions were called into action: from early Christianity to communism, from secret associations to proletarian alliances and partisan associations, from blood relationships (probratimstvo) to multinational states (Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia), from pan-Slavism in all its forms to Tito's "Third Way". The rhetoric and media enactments spanned from the commitment to metaphorical brotherly love to enforced affiliations to extortionate "family clans" that asserted their political goals through bio-politics and racism.

A Cultural History of Serbia

A Cultural History of Serbia

This volume focuses on Serbia’s need to manage change while preserving community identities, a narrative that avoids the common depiction of Serbian culture as a hostile struggle between modernizers supporting foreign models and traditionalists advocating forms of national cultural patrimony. Traditions only function if they are allowed to bend to the necessary modifications demanded by a community’s changing historical circumstances. Tradition and change are two sides of the same coin which Serbia, in its many different incarnations, has experienced over the centuries, protecting its national heritage while borrowing and adapting intellectual and other trends from Byzantine, Ottoman and...
