New and Old Routes of Portuguese Emigration
This open access book offers a comparative overview on Portuguese emigration in Europe and outside the EU in times of recession. It looks at Portuguese emigrants who, after the crisis of 2008, moved both intra-EU, such as UK, France, Switzerland, Germany and Spain, but also into countries with historical links, such as the USA and Canada, and to Portuguese speaking countries such as Brazil, Angola and Mozambique, as well as the processes of return. In addition to the dynamics of movement, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the heterogeneity of this emigration. It deepens the multifaceted identities concerning social and professional pathways among highly skilled and less skilled emigrants. The labour market continues to be the main regulatory force of Portuguese emigration, which helps to explain the outflow and the processes of settlement and return. Nonetheless, this book demonstrates that non-economic factors have likewise been of great importance in the decision to emigrate. As such this book will be a valuable read to policy makers, students and scholars in migration.

Manual of Romance Languages in Africa
With more than two thousand languages spread over its territory, multilingualism is a common reality in Africa. The main official languages of most African countries are Indo-European, in many instances Romance. As they were primarily brought to Africa in the era of colonization, the areas discussed in this volume are thirty-five states that were once ruled by Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, or Spain, and the African regions still belonging to three of them. Twenty-six states are presented in relation to French, four to Italian, six to Portuguese, and two to Spanish. They are considered in separate chapters according to their sociolinguistic situation, linguistic history, external language policy, linguistic characteristics, and internal language policy. The result is a comprehensive overview of the Romance languages in modern-day Africa. It follows a coherent structure, offers linguistic and sociolinguistic information, and illustrates language contact situations, power relations, as well as the cross-fertilization and mutual enrichment emerging from the interplay of languages and cultures in Africa.

Imigração e Envelhecimento Ativo
Este número da Revista Migrações mantém, como os anteriores, a estrutura tripartida formada por artigos científicos, análises de boas práticas e textos de opinião. No que se refere, em particular, aos artigos científicos, há textos nacionais e internacionais, de modo a dar ao leitor uma visibilidade alargada do fenómeno do envelhecimento das migrações e dos migrantes idosos no mundo. Assim, além dos três textos que se referem à realidade portuguesa, há um artigo sobre os migrantes idosos na Suíça e outro sobre um grupo particular de idosos de origem migrante no Brasil, os nipobrasileiros. As abordagens disciplinares seguidas nos artigos são sociológicas, antropológicas e demográficas; as metodologias utilizadas nas investigações a que os textos se referem são quantitativas e qualitativas; há leituras de natureza macro e micro; há análises históricas e comparativas; e, no que se refere especificamente aos estudos sobre Portugal, todos as populações migrantes presentes no país são abordadas, desde os migrantes laborais aos reformados do norte da Europa, passando pelas minorias intermediárias.
A mobilidade académica e a emigração portuguesa qualificada
Neste livro são descritas e analisadas opções de mobilidade e emigração individuais, que se incluem numa longa história que vem sendo escrita desde há séculos por muitos portugueses de diferentes gerações e qualificações que resolveram emigrar. As dificuldades de hoje são menores, os percursos são, regra geral, bem-sucedidos e revelam pessoas que encontraram forma de avançar e que tomaram as rédeas do seu destino. Estas opções individuais são, no entanto, também a expressão de que um mal profundo ataca a Europa, fazendo com que os mais qualificados dos países periféricos e semi-periféricos sejam atraídos pelos países centrais, onde estão disponíveis os recursos, deixando os países menos desenvolvidos entregues a uma economia carente de conhecimento e inovação. Ressoa no murmúrio das vozes dos que ouvimos e inquirimos uma experiência que anseia por ser partilhada e compreendida na sua plenitude.
A Crise e o Direito à Segurança Social: Diagnóstico e Perspetivas
Os textos que agora se publicam correspondem a algumas das intervenções nas Conferências inaugurais de um projeto de investigação conduzido por três Centros da Academia Portuguesa, e intitulado "ART63 - O direito à segurança social e a crise. O retrocesso social como normalização do estado de exceção financeira". Dada a elevada qualidade dos contributos então reunidos, os organizadores das Conferências consideraram ser importante divulgá-los o mais amplamente possível, reunindo-os numa publicação. Destacam-se, na análise, as alterações nos mercados de trabalho e nas relações laborais, marcadas por elementos de flexibilidade e até de precariedade na forma como se estruturam, articuladas com mudanças tecnológicas rápidas e transversais a diversos sectores de atividade económica, e que desafiam o sistema de proteção social português, a nível quer do financiamento, quer da sua adequação.
