Este volumen recoge las actas de un coloquio desarrollado en Toulouse en octubre 2011 con intención de abordar la noción de frontera, cuya complejidad es evidente a lo largo del periodo medieval, y mostrar las tesis doctorales en curso sobre esta temática en Toulouse y Zaragoza. En los 17 textos reunidos y actualizados no solo se trata de la evolución territorial y de la frontera con el islam, sino también de la circulación de bienes e ideas entre las dos vertientes de la cadena pirenaica. Los trabajos interdisciplinares realizados por jóvenes investigadores, tanto como la variedad de las fuentes estudiadas, dan cuenta de las líneas de la investigación actual sobre estas problemáticas.
Slave trading in the Early Middle Ages
This book examines slave trading in northern and eastern central Europe from the seventh century through the eleventh century, tracing its growth, climax, and decline. Demand from the Islamic world in the ninth and tenth centuries prompted changes in warfare, trade logistics, and administrative responses to slavery in the slaving zones centred on the British Isles and the Czech lands. This study establishes slave trading as a core driver of connectivity and presents a model for this practice in politically fragmented areas of Europe.
Local Societies and Peasantry Agencies in Medieval Iberia
Despite the significant attention medieval scholarship has devoted to the study of peasant societies, these groups have traditionally been depicted as passive and homogeneous, merely able of resisting pressures from the state or powerful individuals. However, in recent years, the availability of new records, the widespread adoption of microhistorical analyses, and the renewal of conceptual frameworks have enabled scholars to undertake more detailed and nuanced investigations. This collective volume aims to explore the political, economic, and social practices of Iberian medieval peasant societies. A key finding of this multivocal analysis is the revelation of the relative subalternity of medieval ruling groups and the constraints on peasant actions across various geographical and chronological contexts.
