Currituck County

Currituck County, established in 1668, is the oldest and most northeastern county in the state of North Carolina. It is thought that the name "Currituck" was derived from a Native American word for "wild goose." The county covers 273 square miles of long peninsula that runs north and south along the western shore of the Currituck Sound, which, until the early 1800s, was open to the transatlantic shipping trade. In Currituck County, photographs from the 1860s through the 1960s capture the county during the Civil War, Reconstruction, World Wars I and II, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and technological advances of the 1950s. With the opening of the new Wright Memorial Bridge, dedicated on November 5, 1966, an ever-increasing flood of vacationers traveled through Currituck County to the Outer Banks, and local businesses evolved to accommodate these thousands, and later, millions of visitors. The images seen here show a way of life in Currituck County before the development of tourism.

Camden County

Camden County extends southward from the Virginia line as a peninsula between the North and Pasquotank Rivers into the Albemarle Sound. Named for Revolutionary sympathizer Sir Charles Pratt, the first Earl of Camden, the county was formed on May 9, 1777. Construction of the 22-mile Dismal Swamp Canal began in 1793. The Battle of South Mills was fought on April 19, 1862, in an unsuccessful attempt by the Union to destroy the lock at South Mills. Camden County has continued as a rural community with farming, fishing, and logging as its citizens' primary occupations. Over time, horses, mules, and oxen have been replaced with tractors and combines. The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1973, and the Dismal Swamp Canal, which has survived as the oldest artificial waterway in the United States, continues to serve boaters on the Intracoastal Waterway today. Camden County showcases the rich agricultural heritage of this North Carolina coastal county.

Over the past three decades, impressive progress in the field of pathogenesis, prevention and therapy of ischemic heart disease has resulted in a marked decline in mortality in the Western World. However, the incidence of this devastating disease is on the rise in developing countries. The Ischemic Heart is based upon a recent symposium in Tokyo on the subject. This volume is organized into two sections: (i) Pathophysiologic Mechanisms of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury and (ii) Preconditioning and Protection of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury, and contains up-to-date information concerning the current concepts of ischemia-reperfusion injury, the sequence of events resulting in the loss of contractile dysfunction, and mechanisms of cardioprotection by several drugs as well as the role of ischemic preconditioning in attenuating problems associated with ischemia-reperfusion injury.
