Abstract: We present single-shot electron velocity-map images of nanoplasmas generated from dopedhelium nanodroplets and neon clusters by intense near-infrared and mid-infrared laser pulses. Wereport a large variety of signal types, most crucially depending on the cluster size. The commonfeature is a two-component distribution for each single-cluster event: a bright inner part withnearly circular shape corresponding to electron energies up to a few eV, surrounded by anextended background of more energetic electrons. The total counts and energy of the electrons inthe inner part are strongly correlated and follow a simple power-law dependence. Deviations fromthe circular shape of the inner electrons observed for neon clusters and large helium nanodropletsindicate non-spherical shapes of the neutral clusters. The dependence of the measured electronenergies on the extraction voltage of the spectrometer indicates that the evolution of thenanoplasma is significantly affected by the presence of an external electric field. This conjecture isconfirmed by molecular dynamics simulations, which reproduce the salient features of theexperimental electron spectra

Abstract: Interatomic processes play a crucial role in weakly bound complexes exposed to ionizing radiation; therefore, gaining a thorough understanding of their efficiency is of fundamental importance. Here, we directly measure the timescale of interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in resonantly excited helium nanodroplets using a high-resolution, tunable, extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser. Over an extensive range of droplet sizes and laser intensities, we discover the decay to be surprisingly fast, with decay times as short as 400 fs, nearly independent of the density of the excited states. Using a combination of time-dependent density functional theory and ab initio quantum chemistry calculations, we elucidate the mechanisms of this ultrafast decay process, where pairs of excited helium atoms in one droplet strongly attract each other and form merging void bubbles, which drastically accelerates ICD

This book traces the origins of the "illegal alien" in American law and society, explaining why and how illegal migration became the central problem in U.S. immigration policy—a process that profoundly shaped ideas and practices about citizenship, race, and state authority in the twentieth century. Mae Ngai offers a close reading of the legal regime of restriction that commenced in the 1920s—its statutory architecture, judicial genealogies, administrative enforcement, differential treatment of European and non-European migrants, and long-term effects. She shows that immigration restriction, particularly national-origin and numerical quotas, remapped America both by creating new categories of racial difference and by emphasizing as never before the nation's contiguous land borders and their patrol.
