In Jacopo Strada and Cultural Patronage at the Imperial Court: Antiquity as Innovation, Dirk Jansen provides a survey of the life and career of the antiquary, architect, and courtier Jacopo Strada (Mantua 1515–Vienna 1588). His manifold activities — also as a publisher and as an agent and artistic and scholarly advisor of powerful patrons such as Hans Jakob Fugger, the Duke of Bavaria and the Emperors Ferdinand I and Maximilian II — are examined in detail, and studied within the context of the cosmopolitan learned and courtly environments in which he moved. These volumes offer a substantial reassessment of Strada’s importance as an agent of change, transmitting the ideas and artistic language of the Italian Renaissance to the North.

Does War Belong in Museums?

  • Categories: Art

Presentations of war and violence in museums generally oscillate between the fascination of terror and its instruments and the didactic urge to explain violence and, by analysing it, make it easier to handle and prevent. The museums concerned also have to face up to these basic issues about the social and institutional handling of war and violence. Does war really belong in museums? And if it does, what objectives and means are involved? Can museums avoid trivializing and aestheticising war, transforming violence, injury, death and trauma into tourist sights? What images of shock or identification does one generate - and what images would be desirable?

C.I.C.M. Missionaries, Past and Present, 1862-1987

C.I.C.M. Missionaries, Past and Present begins with the story of the Belgian Mission for China, founded by the diocesan priest Theophile Verbist in 1862. He runs the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (C.I.C.M.) until his death at Lao-hu-kou in 1868, the smallest and poorest mission station of the Provicariate of Mongolia. Being sensitive to the signs of the times and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Congregation keeps accepting new missions and develops into an international congregation of religious missionaries who, although belonging to different cultures and races, live and work together as brothers. One heart and one soul, these international C.I.C.M. communities witness to the universal brotherhood of all men in Christ.
