Atlas Rising

In 2038 the world consists of firmly controlled systems. Every purchase is tracked on the Card. Medical treatment is dictated by a Health Care Index number. One's every steps are tracked. For Andrew Collier this has never been a problem. An astronomer with comfortable means, he has abided by his nation's laws all his life. Until now. Discovering the high probability of an asteroid colliding with Earth, Andrew shares this information with a friend and NASA employee, who grudgingly presses the space agency toward recognition of the coming calamity. Indecisiveness, congressional skepticism, safety regulations, and rigid union contracts whittle the time window for effective action. Returning fro...

The GQ Candidate

The literary debut of political analyst Keli Goff is a savvy tale inspired by the 2008 presidential election. Luke Cooper, one of the first black and, by virtue of adoption, Jewish governors in US history, decides that it is time to run for President. It is a behind-the-scenes look at what happens in the lives of candidates and the people closest to them, when the cameras aren't rolling. In addition to telling the story of his campaign, the novel also follows the lives of Luke's tight-knit circle of friends and reveals how his amazing race changes their lives forever.

Fond of a Double Entendre... . . Obviously

Laughs abound on every page as author Cormac G. McDermott presents this collection of jokes and double entendres with wit and verve. He builds jokes around small nuggets of information, culminating in punch lines that shock, amaze, and tickle the funny bone. From sports to music, from food to the business world, no subject is off limits. You'll never look at the English language the same way again. 'A friend said to me, 'I love Mars bars.' ... I quipped, 'Public houses on the Red Planet are Mars bars also, but if you and your mates were to consume a bar or two of chocolate, it probably wouldn't lead to you ending up getting involved in a sing-song with aliens!!' It makes me laugh when I hear people describing something easy as being 'like stealing candy from a baby.' ... If you were to try take one of those hash lollipops they sell in Amsterdam away from Biffa Bacon's Rastafarian six-month-old, it might be a totally different proposition altogether!!

Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes

Millions of Americans use e-cigarettes. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults. Given their relatively recent introduction, there has been little time for a scientific body of evidence to develop on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes reviews and critically assesses the state of the emerging evidence about e-cigarettes and health. This report makes recommendations for the improvement of this research and highlights gaps that are a priority for future research.

42

When Douglas Adams died in 2001, he left behind 60 boxes full of notebooks, letters, scripts, jokes, speeches and even poems. In 42, compiled by Douglas’s long-time collaborator Kevin Jon Davies, hundreds of these personal artefacts appear in print for the very first time. Douglas was as much a thinker as he was a writer, and his artefacts reveal how his deep fascination with technology led to ideas which were far ahead of their time: a convention speech envisioning the modern smartphone, with all the information in the world living at our fingertips; sheets of notes predicting the advent of electronic books; journal entries from his forays into home computing – it is a matter of legend ...
