Middle Iranian Studies
This volume presents the proceedings of a conference organized in a manner that the papers should cover most areas of research in the field of Middle Iranian. Several contributions contain surveys, summaries, methodological notes or proposals for new research. In this respect the volume may serve as a partial guide to the present state of research. Special attention is paid to Middle Persian, particularly to Pahlavi. Several articles deal with or are devoted to Khotanese.
Les pyramidions égyptiens du Nouvel Empire
L'enquete porte sur les pyramidions inscrits et decores du Nouvel Empire et de la 21e dynastie. La premiere partie de l'ouvrage est constituee d'un inventaire de 107 pyramidions classes d'apres leur lieu de conservation. Plus d'un quart de ces pieces etaient inedites ou seulement mentionnees dans la litterature. La deuxieme partie contient l'etude synthetique des documents et traite en detail de la technique, de la provenance des monuments, de leur decoration, de l'evolution chronologique, des inscriptions, de la fonction architecturale, de la signification religieuse et de l'orientation des pyramidions. Un appendice est consacre a la documentation de Deir-el-Medina.
Architecture and Mathematics in Ancient Egypt

Crafts in the Early Isin Period
La presente synthese porte sur 920 tablettes qui forment un ensemble tout a fait unique dans la documentation cuneiforme. Couvrant une periode de 33 ans, elles datent du tout debut de l'histoire politique d'Isin (regnes d'Isbi-Erra et de Su-ilisi), en un temps ou ce royaume se situe encore dans la droite ligne de la tradition d'Ur. Elles documentent l'activite d'un atelier, l'auteur montrant de facon convaincante qu'il faut comprendre gis-kin-ti comme signifiant un lieu et non pas la fonction d'artisan. Quatre branches d'activites artisanales etaient representees au sein de cet atelier: le travail du bois, du roseau et du textile. Les tablettes mettent en valeur les differentes etapes du travail, autour desquelles l'auteur construit son etude, qu'il complete par l'analyse de plusieurs titres et fonctions. Cette synthese sur l'activite des artisans d'Isin exploite d'une maniere exhaustive un exceptionnel lot d'archives.
19th-century photography in Egypt
Direct na de ontdekking van de fotografie door Louis Daguerre in 1839 stelde Francois Arago aan de Franse Akademie van Wetenschappen de 'faraonische beschaving' voor als een geknipt toepassingsgebied. De keuze van Egypte als eerste toepassingsgebied van de fotografie lag voor de hand: er was de uitdaging van het licht en de schoonheid van de gebouwen die halfverzonken in een uitheems landschap lagen. In vergelijking met de teken-, schilder- en graveerkunst was fotografie onvoorstelbaar precies en gedetailleerd. Eindelijk kon de Europese burgerij de oosterse monumenten in hun werkelijke staat bekijken, zonder subjectieve inbreng van de tekenaar. Weliswaar waren de procedes nog verre van volma...
Aegeans in the Theban Tombs
The wall paintings of several Theban tombs represent foreigners who present gifts that are sometimes typically Cretan or Aegean. Other foreigners, although labeled Princes of Keftiu (Crete), are represented as Asiatics. The aim of the present volume is to analyze these wall paintings in order to distinguish the Aegeans and their gifts. The author manages to establish their characteristics in nine Theban tombs, divides chronologically in two groups, and shows that the related figures reflect actual Aegeo-Egyptian relations in the time of the XVIIIth dynasty, down to c. 1470/1450 BC. This result is obtained by a careful comparison of represented gifts with undoubtedly Minoan objects and documents from the Aegean, especially Crete.
