As the level of globalization in business relationships rises, the importance of questions and problems pertaining to intercultural communication increases more and more. This gives rise to new tasks for the social sciences, which can only be successfully performed through interdisciplinary cooperation in the sense of area-studies. Between 1995 and 2002 for area, the Bavarian research network for area-studies, drew together numerous members of the scientific community who are specialized in the social sciences to pursue previously unresearched topics in areas of overlap of business and culture as exemplified in non-European regions. The most important results are collated here.
Poverty remains a problem in Europe, raising the need for new solutions. In this thought-provoking book the contributors delve deeply into the everyday lives of poor households to see which practices and resources they apply to improve their situations. One of the book’s key findings is that social resilience requires a functioning welfare state operating at an increased level. In addition to sufficient welfare transfers, there is a need for low-commodified common goods to be made available not only for the registered poor but all low-income households.
Almost everyone is shopping at Amazon – it is so convenient after all. The city centres become deserted, the streets get clogged and the trashcans spill over. The manufacturers of quality products are economically exploited, copied (Amazon itself produces cheaper anyways) and the concentration on all levels is rising perpetually. And worse: Alexa is listening to everything, worldwide in all living rooms, the world's biggest retailer knows even the most intimate details of ours – and today it could already decide what it wants to sell us tomorrow – currently they are still asking us, but soon it will arrive on its own. Amazon of course knows what we like to read and what we are all the time looking at on our Amazon screens, and where we close the book out of boredom – better take advantage of the situation and commission something more easily digestible and deliver it to the now fully dependent customer. There's really only one thing left to say: "Shut up, Alexa!"
The reflections on historical and contemporary positions assembled here shed light on concepts of temporalities in the context of artistic practices. In the 1960s and 1970s the pursuit for the situational, processual and actual stirred up artistic and theoretical fields. Nowadays, contemporary practices expand on these subjects by exploring the notion of anachronism, the impermanence of one’s own corporeality together with the performative and ephemeral qualities of the sonic amongst other relevant concepts. The goal of this publication is to offer a deep dive into situation-specific settings and to fundamentally explore how temporality is able to initiate action and structure our perception, thereby affecting our bodies, our senses, how we communicate and how the present moment is shaped.

The study by Alexandra Bernhardt deals with coworking spaces and their atmospheres. In addition to a comprehensive consideration of the role of atmospheres, the special significance of community in the context of these work spaces is examined in more detail. Two case studies in urban coworking spaces form the core of the investigation, following a qualitative research design oriented towards ethnography and a plurality of methods. Film festivals around the world are in the business of making experiences for audiences, elites, industry, professionals, and even future cultural workers. Cinema and the Festivalization of Capitalism explains why these non-profit organizations work as they do: by attracting people who work for free, while appealing to businesses and policymakers as a cheap means to illuminate the creative city and draw attention to film art. Ann Vogel’s unprecedented systematic sociological analysis thus provides firm evidence for the ‘festival effect’, which situates the festival as a key intermediary in cinema value chains, yet also demonstrates the impact of such event culture on cultural workers’ lives. By probing the various resources and institutional pillars ensuring that the festivalization of capitalism is here to stay, Vogel urges us to think critically about publicly displayed benevolence in the context of cinema—and beyond.
This book presents a review of the last twenty years of research in German industrial relations. Divided into three parts, it begins by exploring the major developments in this field of research. It then describes the academic field of industrial relations in Germany from different perspectives, looking back on twenty years of “Industrielle Beziehungen” – the German Journal of Industrial Relations. This is rounded off by an analysis of the changes in the real world of the German model and its major institutions, namely the DGB trade unions and co-determination on the establishment-level. In addition, the book discusses the contributions of neighbouring disciplines, particularly human resource management, economics, and labour law.
