Happy Birthday to You!

To each of us who has enjoyed a piece of birthday cake, the strains of "Happy Birthday to You" are as familiar to our ears as our own names. Yet how many people know the origin of the tune and its place in American history? In 1889 Patty and Mildred Hill, two Kentucky sisters, wrote the words and composed the melody of "Good Morning to All" for their kindergarten students. Initially written as a simple greeting and welcome, they later changed the words and birthday celebrations were forever altered. But it wasn't until 1935 that the sisters' song was fully copyrighted and their names duly credited. Margot Theis Raven, the author of such inspiring children's books as Mercedes and the Chocolat...

Amazing Audition

This hugely different biography starts with the Amazing Audition that propelled Billy Fury from unknown to pop star. Marty Wilde discloses new poignant information, Michael Parkinson describes promoting Billy Fury Shows with 200 dancers and narrators. Robert worked with young Ronald Wycherley who showed songs that he was writing. Ann used her artistic ability to become a friend. Avril accommodated Billy, Marty and other performers at no charge because they were so badly paid. Christine watched filming of ‘Ive Gotta Horse’. Colin Paul is a tribute singer with a big story. Billy visited Marion in hospital leading to a lifelong friendship. Myra writes a heart wrenching story of male jealousy. Pauline became a dedicated fan club worker. Peter has produced a guitar instrumental tribute to Billy. Sandra describes meeting Billy Fury when she was 15 and wrote about his shyness. One hundred and twenty pictures accompany the stories to make this a very interesting compilation.

Lily Daw and the Three Ladies

"Lily Daw is young, pretty, perhaps more than a little peculiar, and in love! However, the well-meaning ladies of the Helping Hand Society are determined to see Lily off to the State Home for the Feeble-Minded. They just don't believe her when she says she's planning to be married this very day. The ladies certainly do have grounds for concern. Lily has always had an odd imagination, and the man she's describing now is a 'show fellow.' One thing is clear to the ladies, the faster they can get Lily committed, the better. They urgently try to get her consent. As they're winning her over, a 'show fellow' appears and actually wants to marry Lily."--Publisher's website

The true story of America’s first superstar evangelist that “fills a significant gap in the history of revivalism” (The New York Times Book Review). Once she answered the divine calling, Aimee Semple McPherson rose fast from unfulfilled housewife in Rhode Island to “miracle woman”—the most enigmatic, pioneering, media-savvy Christian evangelist in the country. She preached up and down the United States, traveling in a 1912 Packard with her mother and her children—and without a man to fix flat tires. Her ministry was rolled out in tents, concert halls, boxing rings, and speakeasies. She prayed for the healing of hundreds of thousands of people, founded the Foursquare Church, and...
