Stumbling Stones

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon when the phone rang. I was idly wondering if I had the will to vacuum. The siren call of the phone offered a reprieve. It was my big brother calling to tell me that my twin brother, Angus, was dead. That’s all he said, ‘He’s dead.’

We all know that, one day, we will have to walk the dark path of grief. There is no way to prepare. There are no neat answers or ways to deal with loss; we stumble as we go. It’s hard and it hurts but, curiously, there are gifts and unexpected kindnesses to be found in the bleak places.

Stumbling Stones offers stories, consolations and understandings of the difficulties that are held within l...

Radical rest can not only improve physical health, support mental wellbeing and increase emotional resilience but can even change the way we think about ourselves and the world around us. In Rest is Radical, Mel Skinner gives us nine principles which provide the foundation and guidelines to radical rest along with yoga practices that lead us to an embodied way of understanding the principles through the felt experience of slowing down. She explores how symptoms of depression, anxiety, addiction and more can be supported with the practices she shares. This is an invitation to move towards stillness, and in doing so discover a life more peaceful, contented and joyful.

Even as Canadian universities suggest their gender issues have largely been resolved, many women in academia tell a different story. Systemic discrimination, the underrepresentation of women in more senior and lucrative roles, and the belief that gender-related concerns will simply self-correct with greater representation add up to a serious gender problem. Although these issues are widely acknowledged, reliable data is elusive. Glass Ceilings and Ivory Towers fills this research gap with a cross-disciplinary, data-driven investigation of gender inequality in Canadian universities. Research presented in this book reveals, for example, that women are more likely to hold sessional teaching positions and to face difficulties obtaining funding. They are also poorly represented at the upper echelons of the professoriate and must contend with a gender pay gap that widens as they move up the ranks. Contributors consider the daily grind of academic life, social, structural, and systemic challenges, and the gendered dynamics of university leadership, all with an eye to laying the groundwork for practical and meaningful institutional change.

Quackonomics!

Fake news is bad enough. We cannot allow ourselves to be buried in fake medicine. This book looks at quackery practiced under the cover of CIM (Complementary and Integrative Medicine). Why? To inform the consumer that there is a better way to spend their health-care dollar. How? By a better understanding of science and the scientific method. A brief summary of the development of science is given, from early Greece, through the Dark Ages, and into the twenty-first century. This history emphasizes that the development of the scientific method originated purely in Western culture, contrary to other interpretations by Islam and the Chinese. It traces the origins of anti-science in the United Sta...
