This thesis encompasses methodological developments in both nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The NMR section explores the effects of scalar relaxation on a coupled nucleus to measure fast exchange rates. In order to quantify these rates accurately, a precise knowledge of the chemical shifts of the labile protons and of the scalar couplings is normally required. We applied the method to histidine where no such information was available a priori, neither about the proton chemical shifts nor about the one-bond scalar coupling constants J(1H15N), since the protons were invisible due to fast exchange. We have measured the exchange rates o...

Handbook of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy In Vivo

This handbook covers the entire field of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), a unique method that allows the non-invasive identification, quantification and spatial mapping of metabolites in living organisms–including animal models and patients. Comprised of three parts: Methodology covers basic MRS theory, methodology for acquiring, quantifying spectra, and spatially localizing spectra, and equipment essentials, as well as vital ancillary issues such as motion suppression and physiological monitoring. Applications focuses on MRS applications, both in animal models of disease and in human studies of normal physiology and disease, including cancer, neurological disease, cardiac and muscl...

Machine Learning and Cognitive Computing for Mobile Communications and Wireless Networks

Communication and network technology has witnessed recent rapid development and numerous information services and applications have been developed globally. These technologies have high impact on society and the way people are leading their lives. The advancement in technology has undoubtedly improved the quality of service and user experience yet a lot needs to be still done. Some areas that still need improvement include seamless wide-area coverage, high-capacity hot-spots, low-power massive-connections, low-latency and high-reliability and so on. Thus, it is highly desirable to develop smart technologies for communication to improve the overall services and management of wireless communic...

This is the second edition of a book first published 15 years ago as "Dermatologic Drug Directory". The book was originally intended as a guide to the drugs required to treat skin diseases. However this new edition is far more of a pictorial aid to the diagnosis of common skin diseases. The first section of the book does still discuss Systemic Drugs, Topical Therapy, and the Side Effects of Drugs, but it then provides a large lavishly illustrated section on the Instant Diagnostic Criteria and Treatment of Common Skin Disorders. This book will be useful to students being introduced to dermatology for the first time, and also to practitioners who can refer to it in their day to day consultations.
