-Excellently written and should be read by all generations. -Pacific Review In The Name Of God follows two years in a life of a teenage protagonist Aleksander (Alek) Brodski, and his mother, Zofia Brodski, a family of two, the only known Jewish family in town. It takes place during the historically crucial years 1967-1969 in a small, isolated town in Eastern Europe, on the border with the Soviet Union and under its domination. The disgruntled populace is in the grips of a communist, totalitarian police state, where the lies become the truth and prevailing doctrine, bitterly evoking the ever-popular cliché "Nothing good has ever come to us from the east." The fateful chain of events is preci...

Focusing on the Dominican Order's activities in southeastern Poland from the canonisation of the Polish Dominican St Hyacinth (1594) to the outbreak of Bogdan Chmielnicki's Cossack revolt (1648-54) this book reveals the renovation and popularity of the pre-existing Mendicant culture of piety in the period following the Council of Trent (1545-64). In so doing, it questions both western and Polish scholarship regarding the role of the Society of Jesus, and the changes within Catholicism associated with it across Europe in the early modern period. By grounding the rivalry between Dominicans and Jesuits in patronage, politics, preaching, and the practices of piety, the study provides a holistic ...

Husbands Bosworth Polish Resettlement Camp (1948-58)

This book presents the history of the Polish resettlement camps in the context of the post-war reconstruction of Britain during the 1950s. The Polish Resettlement Act (1947) concerned some 200, 000 Poles stranded in the country after the war. There are very few studies available in English concerning this migration to the UK and a limited number of Polish ones. The focus of this study is the Husbands Bosworth camp in Northamptonshire which was located on a decommissioned RAF aerodrome at Sulby Hall, between Welford and Naseby. The text relies both on eye-witness testimony, including the author’s own experiences as a child in the camp, as well as on rare documentation located in private arc...
