Crossing Cultures

The rapid rise of technology, freedom of movement and the boom in mobile communication has connected the world like never before. Cross-cultural communication is now the norm in the worlds of business, politics, and education. Students in all disciplines are likely to study for some period in another country and fresh graduates now roam the world in search of exciting opportunities. But parachuting into an unfamiliar culture represents a myriad of challenges. Misunderstanding verbal and non-verbal communication, unconscious stereotyping, and culture shock can derail what should be a rewarding cross-cultural venture. This book is written by lecturers of intercultural communication from a rang...

By Night the Mountain Burns recounts the narrator's childhood on a remote island off the West African coast, living with his mysterious grandfather, several mothers and no fathers. We learn of a dark chapter in the island's history: a bush fire destroys the crops, then hundreds perish in a cholera outbreak. Superstition dominates, and the islanders must sacrifice their possessions to the enraged ocean god. What of their lives will they manage to save? Whitmanesque in its lyrical evocation of the island, Ávila Laurel’s writing builds quietly, through the oral rhythms of traditional storytelling, into gripping drama worthy of an Achebe or a García Márquez.

Bahasa: Rumah Kita Bersama

Meminjam istilah Heidegger, language is a river that brings human being back to its homebeing.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

One of the twentieth century’s enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize–winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America. Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility, the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth—these universal themes dominate the novel. Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. Translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an account of the history of the human race.
