Transgenic crops are now grown in the USA and several other countries, and are now entering some of the developing countries. It was felt that few people in most of the Central American countries knew about the potential benefits and risks of the new technology of transgenic crops, so a workshop was held at the Panamerican Agriculture College in Honduras in May 1996. This publication sets out the presentations, discussion and recommendations of this regional workshop, with reference to cotton, maize and rice crops, legislation aspects and pest resistance management. The booklet with 11 chapters provides an interesting overview of the subject, which would be of interest to other areas of the world. (Review by G.A. Matthews, in: Crop Protection vol. 6, issue 5 (1997)p. 492)

In the U.S., Bt transgenic crops have reached the market after several years of regulatory review and discussions concerning biosafety and durability. Although transgenic crops are entering Mesoamerica, regulations do not exist in that region, and the analysis of appropriate use of the technology is just beginning. To fill the gaps in information, analysis, and recommendations on the use of transgenic crops in Mesoamerica, his book summarizes the presentations, discussion, and recommendations of the representatives from seven Mesoamerican countries who attended a workshop in 1996. This Special Issue explores underrepresented aspects of the political dimensions of global warming. It includes post- and decolonial perspectives on climate-related migration and conflict, intersectional approaches, and climate change politics as a new tool of governance. Its aim is to shed light on the social phenomena associated with anthropogenic climate change, as well as its multidimensional and far-reaching political effects, including climate-induced migration movements and climate-related conflicts in different parts of the world. In doing so, it critically engages with securitizing discourses and the resulting anti-migration arguments and policies in the Global North in order to identify and give a voice to alternative and hitherto underrepresented research and policy perspectives. In this way, it aims to contribute to a fact-based, critical, and holistic approach to human mobility and conflict in the context of political and environmental crisis.

Pest Management and Food Production

Pest Management and Food Production

In their comprehensive paper, Montague Yudelman, Annu Ratta, and Davi Nygaard examine the key issues with regard to pest management and food production over the coming decades. They draw attention to the lack of adequate information on the magnitude and impact of pest losses; without such information, policymarkers are handicapped when devising strategies for meeting food needs. The authors address both chemical and nonchemical approaches to pest management, highlighting the importance of biotechnology. There is growing public sentiment against biotechnology but little appreciation as yet of its contributions to alleviating hunger by, among other things, controlling pest losses. The authors also address the important subject of the roles of different actors in pest management, most notably the private sector.

The current volume focuses on novel sources of biofungicides, primarily providing complete knowledge of microbial and phytochemical fungicides, studying antifungal activity mechanisms as well as their role in disease management in plants, and fungicide bioremediation. The use of biofungicides as eco-friendly alternative to typical synthetic fungicides is projected to play a significant role in organic farming in the future. Key Features: Discovers novel sources of biofungicides Describes the role of biofungicides in the control of plant diseases Studies antifungal activity mechanisms Explores how to survey and select promising biofungicides
