Binnen de oncologie, de kindergeneeskunde en de transplantatiegeneeskunde ontvangen patiënten vaak geneesmiddelen die balanceren tussen effectiviteit en toxiciteit. De effectiviteit en veiligheid van een medicijnbehandeling bij deze patiënten kan verbeterd worden door onderzoek te doen naar de farmacokinetiek (de relatie tussen dosis en bloedconcentratie) en farmacodynamiek (de relatie tussen concentratie en effect) van deze middelen. Met behulp van nieuwe, geavanceerde analysetechnieken wordt onderzocht of er specifieke demografische, genetische en/of pathologische factoren zijn die verschillen in geneesmiddelkinetiek en -dynamiek tussen patiënten kunnen verklaren.
