Ana Portnoy Brimmer's debut, To Love an Island, offers the stark recognition that disaster is political and colonialism the most violent of storms. Beginning with the aftermath of Hurricane María and spanning the summer insurrection of 2019 and subsequent earthquakes in Puerto Rico, To Love An Island is an exploration of collective trauma, an outpour of amassed grief, a desire for unleashed mourning, a fuck-you to resilience, a brandishing of resistance. Of brazen decolonial conviction-it summons tempests, departures, strawberries, cacerolas, mangroves, guillotines, all the complexities of loving a place under imperial duress. ANA PORTNOY BRIMMER is a poet and organizer from Puerto Rico. He...

It was a swallow who called it first. "Fire's coming!" And the animals ran away. Even the insects tried to flee. The girl and her family left, too. All I could do...was wait. When a wildfire comes roaring into the forest, all the animals and humans flee. But all the tree can do is wait. Wait until many days and nights pass. Wait until the fire loses the battle. And wait until the forest is still before the forest can be reborn and the animals and the girl can come back. Inspired by the 2013 Black Forest fire and told from the viewpoint of a tree watching its home destroyed, Hello, Tree is about the kinship between humans and nature, and preservation of the environment.

Glycoscience: Chemistry and Chemical Biology I–III

Glycostructures play a highly diverse and crucial role in a myriad of organisms and systems in biology, physiology, medicine, and bioengineering and technology. Only in recent years have the tools been developed to partly understand the highly complex functions and chemistry behind them. In this set the editors present up-to-date information on glycostructures, their chemistry and chemical biology, in the form of a comprehensive survey. The text is accompanied by over 2000 figures, chemical structures and reaction schemes and more than 9000 references. The accompanying CD-ROM enables, besides text searches, searches for structures, schemes, and other information.

There is a gap between the extensive mathematics background that is beneficial to biologists and the minimal mathematics background biology students acquire in their courses. The result is an undergraduate education in biology with very little quantitative content. New mathematics courses must be devised with the needs of biology students in mind. In this volume, authors from a variety of institutions address some of the problems involved in reforming mathematics curricula for biology students. The problems are sorted into three themes: Models, Processes, and Directions. It is difficult for mathematicians to generate curriculum ideas for the training of biologists so a number of the curriculum models that have been introduced at various institutions comprise the Models section. Processes deals with taking that great course and making sure it is institutionalized in both the biology department (as a requirement) and in the mathematics department (as a course that will live on even if the creator of the course is no longer on the faculty). Directions looks to the future, with each paper laying out a case for pedagogical developments that the authors would like to see.
