Biomimetic and Biohybrid Systems
This book constitutes the proceedings of the First International Conference on Biomimetic and Biohybrid Systems, Living Machines 2012, held in Barcelona, Spain, in July 2012. The 28 full papers and 33 extended abstracts presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in this book. The conference addresses themes related to the development of future real-world technologies which will depend strongly on our understanding and harnessing of the principles underlying living systems and the flow of communication signals between living and artificial systems.
Courts and Courtiers in Renaissance Northern Italy
The extraordinary cultural Renaissance in the northern Italian courts of the late 15th and early 16th centuries is the subject of this volume. It starts with Baldessar Castiglione's Book of the Courtier (1528) which encapsulates this sense of renewal: his experiences at court and their subsequent rewriting form the backbone of the work. The author then addresses questions of biography, gender, genre, and the varied roles of the courtier, expanding the perspective of Castiglione's text to include the lives and writings of other courtiers and patrons. What was it like to be a courtier? What were the problems associated with such a lifestyle? The importance of women in court circles is also highlighted in studies of one of the most notable of female patrons Isabella d'Este (1474-1539) and of the theoretical developments in writing about gender, stimulated by such women. Stephen Kolsky's analysis of both well-known and comparatively obscure texts brings out the diversity of practices that constituted court society and their centrality to our understanding of the Renaissance.

This book, a collection of essays in English dealing with women in Italian culture, consists of two sections reflecting a variety of themes and intellectual and political interests. The first section, "Women and the Male Gaze: The Literary and Artistic Heritage", analyses ways in which women were constructed by men through a variety of literary and other discourses, from the Divine Comedy to the twentieth century. The second section, "Tradition and Transformation: Women in Society and the Movement towards Liberation", focuses on definitions by women themselves on their cultural and social identity, and the gradual and at times contradictory evolution of these definitions - changes in women's attitudes towards marriage and the family, proposed reforms to the laws on domestic and sexual violence, and lullabies in Northern and Central Italy as an expression of women's frustration and anger at their position.
