The Internationalisation of Young High-Tech Firms

There is now a certain tradition of Anglo-German comparative research on new technology-based firms (NTBFs). Two of the most influential studies in this area have both been sponsored by the Anglo-German Foundation for the Study of In dustrial Society (AGF). Starting in 1977, the first AGF project on NTBFs, which was carried out by the consultancy firm Arthur D. Little, has been one ofthe most important early contributions in this field (Little 1977). This report was the first public document to use the term 'new technology-based firm' and to provide a definition, which despite its operational limitations subsequently became an es tablished term in the literature. More importantly, this study...

Knowledge, Complexity and Innovation Systems

In recent years there has been growing scientific interest in the triangular relationship between knowledge. complexity and innovation systems. The concept of'innovation systems' carries the idea that innovations do not originate as isolated discrete phenomena, but are generated through the interaction of a number of actors or agents. This set of actors and interactions possess certain specific characteristics that tend to remain over time. Such characteristics are also shared by national, regional, sectoral and technological interaction systems. They can all be represented as sets of [institutional] actors and interactions, whose ultimate goal is the production and diffusion of knowledge. T...

Bioeconomy and Sustainability

In this edited volume, scientists from different disciplines discuss modern biotechnological processes and a knowledge-based bioeconomy. The authors base their arguments on ecological, economic, legal, social and ethical aspects. Moreover, they explore the opportunities, risks, and challenges of bioeconomic concepts and biotechnologies in many subject areas. The chapters consider land use, nature and environment, nutrition, technology and governance, energy, economy, law and regulation, as well as ethics. A special focus should be on new technologies and how they can be used, without compromising the ambitious goal of creating a more sustainable, but also fair world. To do justice to this broad array of topics, the editors frame all topics in overarching introductions and close the volume with final conclusions. Thereby this volume offers data and critical thoughts for any member of a Bioeconomy – be it from academia, the industry or public regulation.

Sustaining Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth

Academic research on developed countries has scientifically evaluated the role of entrepreneurship on economic growth, market expansion, commercializing innovation, and reducing unemployment. In this research, regions or industries with higher rates of entrepreneurship show higher levels of innovation and economic growth. The literature on entrepreneurship and innovation has largely ignored developing countries, despite the positive results from new venture investments in India, China, and elsewhere. This volume bridges this gap by bringing together research by scholars in Germany and India, whose analysis of entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic development in their respective countries reveals commonalities. Covering such timely issues as R&D and labor policies and including case examples from the chemical, biotech, and IT industries, the authors offer insight into the entrepreneurial process. The volume concludes with a discussion of the global implications for entrepreneurship research and policy.

Over the past two years, the debate on the review of the EU regulatory framework for electronic communications has become hectic. After the European Commission adopted its proposed set of measures in November 2007, the European Parliament has shown an unprecedented interest in topics such as spectrum policy, functional separation of the incumbents' networks, the creation of a new European authority on telecoms, etc. After the successful experience of the first CEPS Task Force on "Policy Challenges for the Information Superhighway", which ended in June 2006, a new Task Force on "Achieving the Internal Market for e-communications" was launched by CEPS with the explicit aim to provide expertise to Members of the European Parliament in their reading of the proposed review. The Task Force was chaired by Magnus Lemmel, former Acting Director General at DG Enterprise, European Commission, and currently Senior Advisor at KREAB. This report summarises the results of the opinions that were expressed over five meetings, the last two of which took place inside the European Parliament. This highly influential report was drafted by Andrea Renda, Senior Research Fellow at CEPS.
