Evil Angels

The basis for the Meryl Streep film A Cry in the Dark: The dramatic true story of a mother’s worst nightmare and the murder trial that shocked Australia. On a camping trip at Ayer’s Rock, the Chamberlain family’s infant daughter disappeared in the middle of the night. Her distraught mother, Lindy, claimed she saw a dingo carry her off into the Australian outback. Two years later, their tragedy worsened when, without a murder weapon, a body, or even a motive, a jury convicted Lindy Chamberlain of killing her own daughter. The public cheered. John Bryson, a trial lawyer and award-winning journalist, deconstructs the factors that led to a seemingly reasonless incarceration and the public ...

A Passion for Justice

Vernon D Plueckhahn was for many years Australia’s most prominent forensic pathologist. His expertise was central in correcting some of Australia’s worst miscarriages of justice, most notably the wrongful 1982 conviction of Lindy Chamberlain for murder. This book traces his life, of first serving on a hospital ship for four years in World War II, then becoming a doctor, and then from a small base as the first pathologist at Geelong Hospital becoming known nationally and internationally. He led the way in forensic pathology – in research, for example, to validate autopsy measurement of blood alcohol and then linking alcohol misuse and drowning. He was instrumental in transforming the small regional hospital of Geelong into a leading academic centre. He steered the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia through turbulent times in the 1970s. His achievements were quite remarkable, with the greatest being the formation of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, which is now a world leading institution.

Failures of Command

This is the story of our quest for answers and the shocking facts that emerged. On 29 August 2012 Private Robert Poate, Lance Corporal Rick Milosevic and Sapper James Martin were killed during an insider – or green on blue – attack in Afghanistan. Their killer, a supposed ally, was a Taliban sleeper in the ranks of the Afghan National Army. Information provided to the families by rank-and-file soldiers after the event shocked them. And the heavily redacted internal investigation report excluded a plethora of potentially incriminating facts. This powerful book is the result of a father’s quest to find out the truth behind the death of his soldier son. Hugh Poate’s search reveals a lab...

Japanese geographer Yasuhiro Suzuki shares his touching memories of the Balkans and Türkiye (Turkey) that he has kept secret for 30 years. With only a smile as his business card wherever he went, he was confused by paperless toilets, jeep rides through the countryside, and scared by the whistles of border guards. This is the place where the straits both separates the land and connects people.

The Military as a Separate Society

  • Categories: Law

The exercise of public power by the military in civilian Western democracies such as Australia and the United States demonstrates a tendency toward diminished responsibility for moral behavior. Pauline Collins argues that a different system of military criminal investigation and discipline outside the civilian justice system enables the military to operate like a coterie and can lead to a failure in the requisite moral standard of behavior required of military personnel and maintaining civilian institutional control. Collins argues that the justifications for separate treatment weakens both the military reputation and the practice of civilian control of the military as well as leading to an overall decline in morality and values in a democratic society.
