This book examines the effects of Jewish conversions to Christianity in late medieval Spanish society. Ingram focuses on these converts and their descendants (known as conversos) not as Judaizers, but as Christian humanists, mystics and evangelists, who attempt to create a new society based on quietist religious practice, merit, and toleration. His narrative takes the reader on a journey from the late fourteenth-century conversions and the first blood purity laws (designed to marginalize conversos), through the early sixteenth-century Erasmian and radical mystical movements, to a Counter-Reformation environment in which conversos become the advocates for pacifism and concordance. His account ends at the court of Philip IV, where growing intolerance towards Madrid’s converso courtiers is subtly attacked by Spain’s greatest painter, Diego Velázquez, in his work, Los Borrachos. Finally, Ingram examines the historiography of early modern Spain, in which he argues the converso reform phenomenon continues to be underexplored.
This book examines the careers and writings of five inquisitors, explaining how the theory and regulations of the Spanish Inquisition were rooted in local conditions.
At no other point in human history have the definitions of "woman" and "man," "male" and "female," "masculine" and "feminine," been more contentious than now. This book advances a pragmatic approach to the act of defining that acknowledges the important ethical dimensions of our definitional practices. Increased transgender rights and visibility has been met with increased opposition, controversy, and even violence. Who should have the power to define the meanings of sex and gender? What values and interests are advanced by competing definitions? Should an all-boys’ college or high school allow transgender boys to apply? Should transgender women be allowed to use the women’s bathroom? Ho...
Mixed Reality has been part of our lives ever since we first started to dream of creative ways to comprehend information and concepts through actual and imaginative experiences. This book explores the latest research informing education design in virtual and augmented reality. By utilising numerous studies and examples, it describes the differences between perceived knowledge, usage area, technologies, and tools. It will help the reader gain a better understanding of the nature of virtual or augmented realities and their applications in theory and practice.
Developing Speed is the definitive resource for developing speed training programs to improve performance. Including speed training drills for 12 sports, and assessments for testing speed, this authoritative guide blends theory with best practice to provide all the tools needed for maximizing speed.
This book presents an account of innovative methods and, for most of them, gives direct and practical insights into how practitioners can benefit from their use in their everyday practice. It also explains how to interpret the data measured, and the underlying neuromechanical and biomechanical factors related to sports performance. Written and edited by the same researchers who proposed and validated these methods, this book not only presents innovative methods for an efficient training and testing process (most of which are based on very simple technology and data processing methods), but also discusses the associated background information. Although it is a young scientific discipline, sport biomechanics has taken on an important role in routine sports training, medicine and rehabilitation. It allows both a better understanding of human locomotion and performance and better design of training and injury prevention. In those processes, the testing of athletes is crucial, and the quality and quantity of the variables analysed directly influences the efficiency of physicians’, coaches’, physiotherapists’ and other practitioners’ interventions.
This book reports on cutting-edge digital technologies and their applications in physical activity and sport. Gathering selected chapters from the 1st International Conference on Technology in Physical Activity and Sport, held virtually on November 24-27, 2020, from Seville, Spain, it offers a practice-oriented and evidence-based perspective on how technologies can be used for evaluation and control of different parameter relating to sport, physical activity, and health. It covers how digital technologies can be applied for training and monitoring purposes, and for improving athlete’s performance, how they influence sport habits in different populations, demonstrating their growing influen...
