Amitabha Sengupta, a blind professor, divorced, humiliated, isolated, sets out for Trivandrum to take part in a seminar in a bid to rebuild his life from scratch. Let down by his escort, he is forced to travel alone on a train. As the train races through the shifting social and political landscape, Amitabha finds himself face to face with unexpected incidents and far more unexpected individuals. All these encounters make him oblivious of his sorrows and despair, and make him come out of the hibernation he had gone into. At the end of it all, he finds himself completely transformed. Not only is he altered by the situations but he also feels some of his interlocutors changing for better or for worse. It is a tale of a blind man’s interaction with his surroundings-social, political and psychological not as a passive onlooker but as an active and enlightened individual.

He could have had everything. If only he had said, 'Thank You'. In September, the month where IIT-ians do distinctly non-IITian things, Samar was having the time of his life. With Rock shows, JAM sessions, debates and politics, his life resembled a colourful graffiti. Adding chaos to this randomness were his three partners-in-crime, Pranav, Skimpy and Jiya. Together they made sure that life was impossibly wild and barely legal. Things hit a crescendo when Samar found himself as the frontrunner in the race for the head of the student body at IIT. And that is when the tide began to turn, in a way Samar could have never imagined. A causal ambition threatened to come true, and threw at Samar dilemmas that would stump any IITian with a pair of glasses. Dilemmas which required skills not taught in any classroom, including the secret art of disaster management.

When the idea of penning down my memories of a life, varied across many facets, first struck the author, it was then little more than ticking off an item in a wish list. Gradually, this changed to be a more substantial effort, to a journal of life, a legacy of sorts to people who have made a difference to his life, for better or worse. When we think of human interactions and relationships, covering bonds of love, friendship, hatred and indifference, we soon realize that they are far more complex than the simple and deterministic laws of physics and chemistry. What we ‘know’ can only be understood through a multi-dimensional function of time, persona and many other unknown factors. Over the last six decades, the author has seen relationships change colour and shape, form and strength, not once but many times. Does that make us chameleons, in a sense? No, it is just that the human mind and heart resemble kaleidoscopes that keep generating different images, even if exactly the same stimulus is given, but at different points of time.
