Political Emotions
Political Emotions explores the contributions that the study of discourses, rhetoric, and framing of emotion make to understanding the public sphere, civil society and the political realm. Tackling critiques on the opposition of the public and private spheres, chapters in this volume examine why some sentiments are valued in public communication while others are judged irrelevant, and consider how sentiments mobilize political trajectories. Emerging from the work of the Public Feelings research group at the University of Texas-Austin, and cohering in a New Agendas in Communication symposium, this volume brings together the work of young scholars from various areas of study, including sociology, gender studies, anthropology, art, and new media. The essays in this collection formulate new ways of thinking about the relations among the emotional, the cultural, and the political. Contributors recraft familiar ways of doing critical work, and bring forward new analyses of emotions in politics. Their work expands understanding of the role of emotion in the political realm, and will be influential in political communication, political science, sociology, and visual and cultural studies.
Lexicon for an Affective Archive
To study an archive or archival materials is to encounter an affective and critical practice involved in the construction of memory. Lexicon for an Affective Archive, edited by Giulia Palladini and Marco Pustianaz, is an international collection of these encounters, offering glimpses into the intimate relations inherent in finding, remembering (or imagining) and creating an archive. Bringing together voices from a variety of fields across the humanities, performance studies and contemporary art, and engaging in a multidisciplinary analysis, this beautifully designed and fully illustrated volume advances the idea of an “affective archive” as a useful conceptual tool – a tool which contributes to an understanding of an expanded notion of an archive and its central role in contemporary visual and performing arts. Cruising the Archive: Queer Art and Culture in Los Angeles, 1945-1980 explores the rich history of queer art, activism and culture in Los Angeles through artworks, documents, and archival items culled entirely from the collections at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives, the largest LGBTQ archive in the United States. Cruising the Archive includes essays by Ann Cvetkovich, Vaginal Davis, Jennifer Doyle, Judith "Jack" Halberstam, Catherine Lord, Richard Meyer, Ulrike Muller, and Dean Spade that examine various topics related to queer art, aesthetics, politics, and the archive. This publication also includes information on artworks and archival materials from ONE Archives, reprints from early queer publications from Los Angeles including ONE Magazine, an introduction by the exhibition's co-curators David Frantz and Mia Locks, and a map of historical sites referenced in the publication compiled by Zemula Barr. Artist Onya Hogan-Finlay has produced a limited edition poster that functions as a book jacket, featuring a photograph of friends of ONE Archives.

The contributors draw on their experiences conducting research in disciplines such as sociology, African American studies, English, communications, performance studies, anthropology, and womens and gender studies.
