Sweet Life
Ed van der Elsken's Sweet Life published in 1966 is considered one of the key works of Dutch photobook history. In 1960, armed with two magazine commissions and a stipend from Netherlands television, Ed van der Elsken and his wife Gerda set off on a fourteen month journey around the world. Six years after their return, he published his travelogue Sweet Life which exhibited a panoply of layout effects - double-page bleeds, crops, printed in deep gravure, and different cover designs for each of the six countries in which it was published. Photographs by Ed Van der Elsken A new edition of one of the classics of photography by one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century. Originally published in 1954, and long out of print, this is a facsimile edition of the original and has been printed from the negatives held by the Netherlands Photo Archive. The work focuses on the Left Bank of Paris at the time when the area was recognised as a centre of creative ferment which would determine the cultural agenda of a generation. 200 plates.

Arno Nollen's photographs of young girls are a shocking slap in the face. They also ask a fundamental question: Are you a voyeur if your subjects are complicit? The girls here, sporting bruises, tattoos, see-through pantyhose, hard looks, freckles, and often nothing at all, are poised between childhood and adulthood. Even the simple headshot portraits provide an uncomfortable gaze at an uncomfortable age.
Communist Ghosts
This book explores post-communist thresholds as materializations of a specific crisis of modern European identity that was caused by the existence and sudden breakdown of Soviet-type communism. It shows how post-communist thresholds emerge where relics from the communist experience continue disrupting the routines and rhythms of a modern life and confront Europeans with cultural experiences, affects and material realities of the ‘enlightened world’ which they usually seek to repress or ignore. In exploring and writing through art projects which engage with the psychosocial fabric of such post-communist thresholds, this book finds ways of speaking and thinking through these transitory and paradox sites, and asks what we can say about other or new worlds, about new beginnings and endings as well as about decolonial and ethical ways of relating to the other when assessing the status quo of European modernity from within its liminal and crisis-driven sphere.
Disability and Art History
This is the first book of its kind to feature interdisciplinary art history and disability studies. Moving away from the medical model of disability that is often scrutinized in art history, the book considers the social model and representations of disabled figures. Topics addressed include visible versus invisible impairments; scientific, anthropological, and vernacular images of disability; and the implications of looking/staring versus gazing. Disability and Art History explores ways in which art responds to, envisions, and at times stereotypes and pathologizes disability, and aims to contextualize disability historically, as well as in terms of medicine, literature, and visual culture.
