I first used the Internet in fall 1993, as a Fulbright Scholar at Charles University in Prague. In the last few years Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have emerged as a transforming element in language teaching and learning and have become an integral part of many courses of English for professional and academic purposes (ESP). This collection brings together contributions from ESP teachers, who provide an account of educational experiences involving ICTs and share their practices, successes, failures and reflections. Most papers in the volume report on blended learning experiences, where teachers use either Course Management Systems like WebCT or Moodle, or online learning environments created by themselves. The contributions give ideas on how to develop pedagogically sound online language learning materials. Additionally, they discuss issues related to online language pedagogy and promote the development of online learning.
This volume explores English Studies from the perspective of linguistics and applied linguistics. By examining developments within their selected topics, the authors of these 18 chapters provide a broad overview of English Studies as related to their specific points of interest. Topics range from the well-established, such as negation, grammaticalization, and the role of culture in learning English, to those that are currently being revisited or are considered relatively new, such as corpus analysis, English as a lingua franca, and third language acquisition. The chapters reflect a modern approach to linguistic and applied linguistic phenomena, including diachronic and synchronic perspectives, as well as quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. English Studies as practiced at the English Department in Zagreb during the last 80 years, the anniversary of which instigated the invitation of contributions for this collection, are presented here as a vibrant field, characterized by dynamics and complexities that introduce novel ideas, and help us embrace emerging aspects of more established concepts.
Dictionaries are mines whose word-gems encapsulate centuries of language history and cultural traditions; they are store-houses of meanings and uses, ‘lamp genies’ to be set free at the very moment readers set their eyes on their entries. This book is an attempt to free such lamp genies, by discussing the role of dictionaries in the identification and expression of cultural aspects in language, with special reference to English. As such, its eleven chapters have been arranged to focus on general, genre-specific, monolingual and bilingual lexicography, both from a diachronic and a synchronic perspective. The book will be of use to lexicographers and lexicologists, as well as to corpus linguists, historical and contemporary English scholars, students of English, and anybody interested in the juice of culture(s) that can be fruitfully extracted from dictionary entries.

The aim of this volume is to look into how academic identity is discoursally constructed in CMC (computer-mediated communication), using the example of an e-seminar. An e-seminar is an asynchronous type of CMC, where private, public and institutional domains merge, and therefore it provides an interesting context for exploring academic communication phenomena in cyberspace.
