Brave New Avant Garde
Brave New Avant Garde is a collection of essays that ask the questions: what is an adequate model of contemporary avant garde practice and what are its theoretical premises? With this it asks the related question, echoing Alain Badiou: must the avant garde hypothesis be abandoned? Brave New Avant Garde stands in opposition to postmodern post-politics and the view that radical practice has no other future than its reduction to the workings of the free market in the form of the "simple process of cultural production" or to variations on the cultural politics of representation. Today's avant garde, formed in the wake of the end of the Soviet Union and the rise of the anti-globalization movement, represents a counter-power that rejects the inevitability of capitalist integration. The way out for artists in today's world of creative industries is defined in these pages as a psychoanalytically informed sinthomeopathic practice, a critical identification with prevailing conditions of production that avoids the surplus enjoyment of the ideology of postmodern pluralism.

Ulus Baker (1960 - 2007) was a Turkish-Cypriot sociologist, philosopher, and public intellectual. He was born in Ankara, Turkey in 1960. He studied Sociology at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, where he taught as a lecturer until 2004. Baker wrote prolifically in influential Turkish journals and made some of the first Turkish translations of various works of Gilles Deleuze, Antonio Negri, and other contemporary political philosophers. His profuse and accessible work and the novelty of the issues he enthusiastically introduced to Turkish-speaking intellectual circles, earned him a widely spread positive reputation in early age. Tectonic Affects in Contemporary Architecture
Tectonics is an old, ontological concept which simultaneously claims to cover the aesthetics/meaning and the technological/technical in architecture. However, since the advent of ‘modernity’, the relationship between architecture and building technology has been problematic. Some of these problems, which are reflected in the theories of architecture and tectonics, relate to the separation of the technology/technical dimension from the aesthetic/artistic, rendering one of them dominant over the other. This book explores the tectonic affects in architecture because these do not separate building technology and aesthetics or meaning. Affects are preconscious aesthetic feelings which can cause meanings if we start thinking about these affects. The book claims that tectonic affects can generate aesthetic value and meaning. It adopts a practical position towards architectural aesthetics and meaning, and concentrates on tectonic affects.
