New Prospecting in the Orontes Region
From the Palaeolithic onwards, the Orontes Region has been settled without interruption and therefore is one of the archaeologically richest areas of Syria. Its exploration began with Danish excavations at Tell Hama and the investigation of the metropolis of Qatna by Comte de Mesnil du Buisson. Since the late 1990s it has been researched in many field projects on which the twelve papers of this book report in a preliminary way. The volume is divided into surveys of regions [7 articles], surveys of individual find sites [4], and excavations in the settlement at Shir of the 7th millennium [1]. The regional studies deal with the area of Homs / Emesa from the Palaeolithic until Islamic times, the development of the Central Orontes Valley in the Roman Period, a zone west of Homs with 132 archaeological sites, a section of the Orontes River around Hama north of Homs, the Palaeolithic finds from there as well as with an area north-west of Hama containing many tell settlements. The individual settlements are the Bronze Age and Iron Age Tell Mijweiz, the legionary fortress and Roman city of Raphaneae, the Ayyubid-Mamluk castle at Shayzar/Larissa, and the Old Town of Hama.

Luminescence Dating in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Geoarchaeology
The field of Luminescence Dating has reached a level of maturity. Both research and applications from all fields of archaeological science, from archaeological materials to anthropology and geoarchaeology, now routinely employ luminescence dating. The advent of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques and the potential for exploring a spectrum of grain aliquots enhanced the applicability, accuracy and the precision of luminescence dating. The present contribution reviews the physical basis, mechanisms and methodological aspects of luminescence dating; discusses advances in instrumentations and facilities, improvements in analytical procedures, and statistical treatment of data along with some examples of applications across continents, covering all periods (Middle Palaeolithic to Medieval) and both Old and New World archaeology. They also include interdisciplinary applications that contribute to palaeo-landscape reconstruction.
