Egocentricity is characteristically human. It is natural for our prime in terest to be ourselves and for one of our major concerns to be what affects us personally. Aging and death - universal and inevitable have always been of compelling concern. Mystical explanations were invented when scientific answers were lacking. and gross physiologi As scientific knowledge developed, anatomy cal processes were explained, and the roles of the endocrine glands were revealed. Since the sex hormones obviously lose some of their potency with age, it was logical to assume that they played the major role in declining general well-being. The puzzle of aging would now be solved. The Ponce de Leon quest would soon be fulfilled. Pseudoscientists and quacks rushed in where most scientists feared to tread. By the time the glowing promises of perpetual youth through gland transplants and injections had proved illusory, serious study of the aging process had been set back for years. The field had lost "respect ability," and most capable scientists shunned it. Those who did con tinue to seek answers to its tough questions deserve special recognition.
Food or calorie restriction has been shown in many short-lived animals and the rhesus monkey to prolong life-span. Life-long nutrition studies are not possible in humans because of their long survival. Studies over two to six years in healthy adult humans have, however, shown that a 20% reduction in food or calorie intake slows many indices of normal and disease-related aging. Thus, it is widely believed that long-term reduction in calorie or food intake will delay the onset of age-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and so prolong life. Abstract: Proceedings of 6 major symposia areas covering 105 technical papers are provided for nutritionists and health professionals. These papers reflect the interdisciplinary nature of nutrition and the interaction that is necessary among scientists. The major areas include: nutrient utilization and requirements; malnutrition and nutritional status evaluation; epidemiologic studies and nutritional intervention; nutritional aspects of growth, aging, and disease; gastrointestinal function and animal nutrition; and nutrition and national policy. Each of these encompasses 2-7 sub-area themes, including: protein-energy requirements and interactions; fat-soluble vitamins; trace elements in human nutrition; marginal malnutrition assessment; nutritional anemias; nutrition related to brain function and behavior; nutritional status related to disease susceptibility; nutrition intervention programs; maternal, fetal, and neonatal nutrition; nutritional care of hospitalized patients; drug-nutrient interactions; nutrient and chronic disease effects; gastrointestinal function in health and disease; and nutritional considerations in national policy and planning.
