Arun Kunjunny's turn toward literature and the arts is not a recent one. As this book of poetry makes clear, his work comes from the heart. His poems deal with a wide variety of topics, from the sublime pleasure of ice cream on a hot day to the challenge and joy of personal motivation. In this book, they are beautifully illustrated by a number of talented and very young artists, children selected from a large number of applicants. With this, Arun has not only presented his first book of poetry to the world, but also created a showcase of creative talent among Indian children. I commend Arun’s decision to publish his work, as well as the published debuts of these young artists. The book focuses on the cultural geographies of India, and to an extent that of South Asia. Sanātana Gosvāmin’s Haribhaktivilāsa (ca. 1540) describes the normative ritual life of a Vaiṣṇava devotee. As it is one of the first Sanskrit texts of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition begun by Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya (1486–1533) it presents a fascinating meeting between this ecstatic new religious movement and older, Brahminical tradition. On the basis of eleven manuscripts, this important text has now been for the first time been critically edited. In his extensive introduction, Måns Broo engages with many of the questions that have vexed earlier scholars of this text (such as who really was the author?) by exploring its extensive intertextualities.
