Promoting Health Through Participation
This study explores the nature of patient participation groups in general practice, examining their strengths as well as their limitations. The development of these groups in recent years is set within the wider context of growing interest in the means of extending consumer participation as well as health promotion. Patient participation groups have been in existence for over a decade and this study examines how they work in practice and is based on a survey of all known groups and takes a closer look at six individual groups. The study argues that these groups can prove highly useful as a means of providing feedback about a practice, health education and voluntary work within their communities. There are, however, considerable limits to the extent to which people will become involved.
