The Portfolio Organizer stands out as a superb contribution to the vital field of accountability for learning. This book is distinguished by the presence and integration of a conceptual framework and a superb array of practical examples. Nearly every key issue is anticipated and addressed in this accessible and clear treatment of a complex topic. The reason that this book is so good is that the authors have been immersed in pioneering work on portfolios for a decade. The Big Book of Small Equines

Although Miniature Horses and Shetland Ponies are smallest of all the equines, the enthusiasm of their owners and other fans is gigantic. And with good reason: Minis and Shetlands are as versatile as they are cuddly, found in backyards and indoors where they make perfect pets, and in the show arena where they are as fiercely competitive as equines ten times their size. This book, a celebration of the Mini and the Shetland, begins with a brief history of the breeds in this country with a fascinating look at influential horses and breeders and the continuing growth of the breeds’ popularity. Owners and other devotees share delightful stories about their bond with their pets through “member of the family” anecdotes. How the small equines excel in the show ring focuses on their riding, driving, and breed classes. “Heartwarming” is the word for the work they do as companion and therapy partners of physically and emotionally challenged humans (case in point: Minis have made trainable and dependably guiding eyes for the blind). Profusely illustrated, The Big Book of Small Equines will captivate every horse-lover the way that Minis and Shetlands have captivated the horse world.

Equestrian Photography

In this book, Barbara Bower (Lorain, OH) teaches beginning and professional photographers how to embrace the art and technique of horse photography. Readers will learn how to prepare a horse and their owner for a portrait session and will also discover how to analyze the portrait location—whether it’s a barn, field, or show grounds—to determine the most effective subject placement. When working on location, and particularly outdoors, lighting can be a challenge. Bower provides tips for finding and capturing exquisite light—or modifying existing light for better results—to bring out the beauty and detail in the horse’s every feature. She also teaches readers how to interact with horses safely and effectively and to use prompts that win their attention and evoke beautiful physical expression.

Class Action

In this inspiring history of a union, labour historian Andy Hanson delves deep into the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and how it evolved from two deeply divided unions to one of the province’s most united and powerful voices for educators. Today’s teacher is under constant pressure to raise students’ test scores, while the rise of neoliberalism in Canada has systematically stripped our education system of funding and support. But educators have been fighting back with decades of fierce labour action, from a landmark province-wide strike in the 1970s, to record-breaking front-line organizing against the Harris government and the Common Sense Revolution, to present-day picket lines and bargaining tables. Hanson follows the making of elementary teachers in Ontario as a distinct class of white-collar, public-sector workers who awoke in the last quarter of the twentieth century to the power of their collective strength.

Although World War II began as a war in Europe, many in the United States, foreseeing the inevitable, began to prepare for war, putting no faith in the Neutrality Act. Preparations for war, essentially ending the Great Depression, affected the entire country, with Virginia particularly playing a major role. More than one million service men and women came to Virginia. The sheer scope of the military development in Virginia of the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force, providing training bases and support facilities, underscores the national resolve to be prepared. The book includes the Civil Air Patrol, wartime industry, POW camps, U-boat attacks, the Beach Patrol and other Virginia-related topics.

This publication, a compilation of 28 technical articles on various aspects of forest nursery management in western North America, consists of two sections. The first 10 papers comprise the Target Seedling Symposium, and discuss the latest methods of describing and measuring the ideal seedling for reforestation purposes. Morphological characteristics such as height, diameter, stocktype, root system size, and mycorrnizae are covered. Considerable attention is paid to physiological tests such as root growth potential, hydraulic conductivity, cold-hardiness, mineral nutrition, seedling moisture status, and mitotic index. Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fvar), stress-induced volatile emissions (SIVE), and electrolyte conductivity (EC) are also discussed. The remaining papers deal with operational aspects of growing forest tree seedlings in bareroot or container nurseries.
