Unfortunate Ends

Thomas, son of Henry Robekyn, died 1286 after cutting off his left foot and then his left hand in a frenzy. Henry Debordesle, died 1343. Long sick with diseases, smote himself in the belly with a knife worth one penny. On 11 August 1267, Henry Constentin is driving a horse-drawn cart of wheat through the field of Tweedscroft. His feet slip and he falls upon ‘a certain pole’ of his cart ‘so that it penetrate[s] into his fundament’. From the creator of Twitter's Medieval Death Bot comes Unfortunate Ends, an illuminating collection of in-depth looks at some of the most interesting cases from medieval coroners’ rolls. From the bizarre to the mundane, each death tells a tale from a dangerous time to be alive, and even to die. Coroners’ rolls list every inquest held for a death by misadventure – or accident – as well as grisly murders, some witnessed by others, some only coming to light when the hidden body was found. A handful of these deaths rise to the top, their tales too ridiculous or heartbreaking to not be spun again for the modern ear. Through death, Unfortunate Ends gives us a rare, first-hand look into everyday life for the common people of medieval England.

When Pincher Dushkin asks Ushkin Dushkin for help with a surplus of butterbean balls, Ushkin has the chance to help his neighbor. Instead, he chooses to walk away. In the end, Ushkin learns that it’s good to help your neighbors when asked, and that helping others can ultimately help him too. Back from a self-imposed hiatus, the indelible father & daughter writing team of John H. Atwood and Jenean Atwood Baynes is back! And with purpose, they keep the spirit of the late Mary L. Atwood, wife & mother, firmly at their side. After the success of the 2nd edition of Blue Spots! Yellow Spots! Atwood Legacy Enterprises is proud to present The Butterbean Balls Came Yesterday! In this new publication, John & Jenean introduce a new character who faces a decision that sometimes besets us all! Come with them again as they travel into The Land of Dushkin — a mystical magical storyland for children and the young at heart! These imaginary, fanciful characters with human-like qualities live in a colorful make-believe world solving everyday problems. The Dushkins help readers learn how to understand the world around them, along with concepts such as critical thinking and decision-making.

In the mystical realm of the Seven Circles, all creatures live in harmony within their own sphere. The noble centaurs live in the forests. The goblins and trolls lurk underground. And in the tranquil center the most evolved beings of all—the elves and the druids—dwell in a peace that has lasted from time out of mind. That is about to change. Disaffected members of all the races are gathering into a seditious force that may portend the fall of the Seven Circles into chaos. Strangers to brutality and warfare, the druids need a champion who can teach them to defend themselves. To this aim, they recruit warriors from a warlike world where only the strong survive. A primitive world where life lasts only as long as you can fight for it. A world called Earth. “Absolutely nobody builds a more convincing fantasy realm than Doug Niles.”—R.A. Salvatore, bestselling author of The Demon Awakens “Niles…writes so well that his characters come to life after only a few lines.” —Starlog
