Pamphlet Architecture 27: Tooling
We all know that today's architectural design has moved from the sketchpad to the screen - the era of the Mayline and the drafting board now seems downright Paleolithic - but techniques for using the computer not just as a tool for rendering but as a generative instrument remain woefully unexplored. The technologically progressive young firm Aranda/Lasch illustrates how advanced computational methods and algorithmic codes can be used to foster architectural design. "Tooling" explores patterns generated by computer codes that in turn create an organizational template assembling projects. By openly sharing these codes, the authors seek to foster further investigation into their methods, allowing other architects to model and evolve more critical and insightful geometries and patterns.
The Making of Design
This book takes an in-depth look at design processes, with twenty-five depictions of "the making of" products from a wide variety of industries. Its primary focuses are furniture design, transportation design, and household appliances. Renowned designers like Konstantin Grcic, the Bouroullecs, Stefan Diez, Hella Jongerius, and Sir Norman Foster offer step by step accounts of how they go about designing products for Vitra, Grundig, Jura, and Authentics – the tools they use for visualization and how projects change during the model phase. Proof
Proof is the ninth in an annual series of publications that features the best young practicing architects as selected by the Architectural League of New York in their annual Young Architects competition. Competition entrants wereasked to use the theme "proof" to frame their portfolios and critically evaluate their work. This required creating projectsthat acknowledge architectural design as a unique process that begins with a speculation and gains traction through the subsequent testing, confirming, checking, and rechecking that occurs before and after designs encounter the real world. Eachof the winners—Aranda/Lasch, Jinhee Park, ludens, PARA, PRODUCTORA, and Uni Architecture—confronted this year's theme with work that is original, and inspiring.
Design and the Elastic Mind
In the past few decades, individuals have experienced dramatic changes in some of the most established dimensions of human life: time, space, matter, and individuality. Processes of making
Computational methods in design practice are powerful tools for solving highly constrained problems, and for refining existing design solutions. Algorithmic tools can help in the design process and significantly extend the range of possible solutions. The automation of many routines and the repetitive activities of the design process both provide a release for an architect, allowing him or her more time to think about the design. The main goal of this research study is to explore the potential of parametric modeling for dynamically resolving and controlling the particular conditions of the design and manufacturing processes. The vision is to be able to approach this process in general by way of several design systems for the construction of architectural models and, finally, to build up life-sized solutions.
