The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) noise program includes an inventory of more than 250 miles of noise barriers around the state. Each noise barrier constructed must be analyzed using the FHWA Traffic Noise Model (TNM) software program to determine if the construction of the barrier is justified. This research study was initiated to identify opportunities to improve the accuracy and validity of ODOT's traffic noise analysis and TNM modeling specifications with specific attention made to the modeling of heavy trucks. Over 44 hours of traffic noise data were collected at noise-sensitive areas at a Type II noise wall project being constructed along Interstate 270 in southeast Columbus...

Enhancing Internal Trip Capture Estimation for Mixed-use Developments

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 684: Enhancing Internal Trip Capture Estimation for Mixed-Use Developments explores an improved methodology to estimate how many internal trips will be generated in mixed-use developments - trips for which both the origin and destination are within the development. The methodology estimates morning and afternoon peak-period trips to and from six specific land use categories: office, retail, restaurant, residential, cinema, and hotel. The research team analyzed existing data from prior surveys and collected new data at three mixed-use development sites. The resulting methodology is incorporated into a spreadsheet model, which is available online for download.

In recent years, the policy and regulatory environment for intercity passenger rail in the United States has shifted dramatically, sparking a renewed interest in intercity passenger rail among policymakers, planners, and the general public. As the nation expands its passenger rail network, a better understanding of the mobility provided by short- to medium-distance corridors is desired. This study examined the Heartland Flyer, a 206-mile intercity passenger rail route between Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Fort Worth, Texas. Researchers analyzed responses to an on-board survey, distributed to passengers in April and July of 2009, to identify who was using the service and how the service impact...

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the cargo industry continues to grow, with air cargo identified as the fastest growing segment within the cargo industry. The value of freight moved by air has doubled since 1993 and currently exceeds $2.7 billion per day. During that same period, the typical freight shipment distance increased 40 percent, partly due to the distances of the air cargo movements. Because most air cargo shipments begin and end using trucks, growth in this segment will undoubtedly create additional growth in truck movements in and around the airport environment. It has been more than 30 years since the state has made a comprehensive review of the air cargo busi...

One safety-related issue that has been identified by ODOT is deer crashes. ODOT OES is proposing to install a "deer passage" within the rock channel protection (RCP) underneath highway bridges that would allow for the deer to pass under the highway instead of going across on the surface. The purpose of this research was to analyze the feasibility of constructing passages within RCP installations under bridges, considering both the needs of the wildlife as well as the technical requirements for ODOT bridges. To meet the needs of wildlife, the passage should include minimum width: 3 feet; minimum vertical clearance: 6 feet; follow along natural stream bank; natural "look and feel" of approache...

Recent policy and regulatory actions by the U.S. government have revived interest in intercity passenger rail among transportation planners, policymakers, and the general public. As part of a fully integrated multimodal intercity corridor, passenger rail can provide a number of measurable impacts on urban, regional, and national mobility. This research examines these impacts using the Milwaukee-Chicago Hiawatha Service intercity passenger rail route as a case study. In addition to providing competitive travel times with automobile travel and frequent daily service, rail passengers can also seamlessly connect to airline service via a station at the Milwaukee airport. Two data sources--an on-b...
