Noise Model-to-monitor Case Study
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) noise program includes an inventory of more than 250 miles of noise barriers around the state. Each noise barrier constructed must be analyzed using the FHWA Traffic Noise Model (TNM) software program to determine if the construction of the barrier is justified. This research study was initiated to identify opportunities to improve the accuracy and validity of ODOT's traffic noise analysis and TNM modeling specifications with specific attention made to the modeling of heavy trucks. Enhancing Internal Trip Capture Estimation for Mixed-use Developments
TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 684: Enhancing Internal Trip Capture Estimation for Mixed-Use Developments explores an improved methodology to estimate how many internal trips will be generated in mixed-use developments - trips for which both the origin and destination are within the development. The methodology estimates morning and afternoon peak-period trips to and from six specific land use categories: office, retail, restaurant, residential, cinema, and hotel. The research team analyzed existing data from prior surveys and collected new data at three mixed-use development sites. The resulting methodology is incorporated into a spreadsheet model, which is available online for download.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the cargo industry continues to grow, with air cargo identified as the fastest growing segment within the cargo industry. The value of freight moved by air has doubled since 1993 and currently exceeds $2.7 billion per day. During that same period, the typical freight shipment distance increased 40 percent, partly due to the distances of the air cargo movements. Deer Passage Through Rock Channel Protection (RCP) Designs and Options
One safety-related issue that has been identified by ODOT is deer crashes. ODOT OES is proposing to install a "deer passage" within the rock channel protection (RCP) underneath highway bridges that would allow for the deer to pass under the highway instead of going across on the surface. The purpose of this research was to analyze the feasibility of constructing passages within RCP installations under bridges, considering both the needs of the wildlife as well as the technical requirements for ODOT bridges.
