The first wind farms in the Dutch coastal area are in operation for about 10 years now. The question is how the area of the wind farm developed in terms of marine environment in those years, as fishing activities were excluded from the area. One of the plans for evaluating this development is a benthic survey, similar to the survey that was conducted five years after the construction of the wind farms. However, a benthic survey can only sample a very small part of the wind farm area and the idea was that a prior survey using a multi-beam echosounder could provide information of seafloor structures on a larger scale. The results might be used to inform the benthic survey in sampling specific ...

The aim of this pilot project is to investigate whether and how harbour porpoise clicks can help us to identify the presence of calves. This would be a first step to developing detection methods applicable to hydrophone data that can identify behaviours and/or calf presence. A method was developed and experimented to record calf clicks, by actively searching for calves on the Oosterschelde and recording their clicks while close. Five field trips were conducted over the summer of 2021. Finding harbour porpoises was done with the help of Rugvin Foundation and was successful, but finding calves proved a bit harder. Moreover, calves always occur in close vicinity of their mother, so isolated rec...

A single-stock was included in this inter-benchmark: North Sea Autumn Spawning (NSAS) herring (her.27.3a47d). This inter-benchmark process was put forward because of: 1) newly available natural mortality values and 2) a discrepancy in the handling of natural mortality (M). For the NSAS assessment, natural mortality is provided every 3–4 years by WGSAM. This is often associated with a rescaling of the assessment. At WKPELA 2018, a profiling method was developed to handle the introduction of new natural mortalities and in turn, alleviate the potential rescaling of the assessment. The method consists of the testing of the fit of the assessment model for a range of additive rescaling (fixed ac...

WKNSMSE (Workshop on North Sea stocks Management Strategy Evaluation) took place over two physical meetings (19-21 November 2018 and 26-28 February 2019, but at ICES HQ, Copen-hagen) and several WebEx meetings, was chaired by José De Oliveira (UK) and included 30 par-ticipants from Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UK and the European Com-mission, and two reviewers from South African and New Zealand. The purpose of this work was to evaluate long-term management strategies for jointly-managed stocks in the North Sea (cod, haddock, whiting, saithe and autumn-spawning herring) between the European Union and Nor-way, following a request from EU-Norway. The first physical meeting pr...
