Intellectuals in History
This work aims to fill a gap in our knowledge of French cultural history between the wars. The contribution of the Nouvelle Revue Française to the intellectual history of this period. He has not been studied before. The current study, based on the archives of the editor, Jean Paulhan, examines the subject thematically.

Selon Rousseau, une philosophie qui n'a pas été éprouvée au contact de la vie reste stérile. Elle ne pourra que détruire et ne saura édifier. Telle est, pour lui, la philosophie moderne, philosophie des heureux du siècle et des esprits forts ; elle tourne en dérision ce qui est sacré et établit une morale sans racine ni fruit. Si elle parvient à développer la culture qui orne l'esprit, elle ne saurait nourrir l'âme. Voilà ce que Rousseau reproche aux philosophes, voilà ce qu'il reproche à la civilisation. C'est à cette philosophie, à cette civilisation qu'il opposera son idée de l'homme naturel, de l'homme tel qu'il est sorti des mains de la nature, ou même encore de l'homme tel qu'il est lorsque, s'étant défait des artifices et des intérêts factices, il se retrouve lui-même.

Race and State
In Part II Voegelin deals with race ideas, which he distinguishes from race theories. Race ideas, like other political ideas, form a part of political reality itself, contributing to the formation of social groups and societies. Voegelin shows that the modern race idea is just one "body idea" among others, such as the tribal state and the Kingdom of Christ, each offering a different symbolic image of community.
