This book is comprised of almost 100 photographs, each remarkably special in terms of artistic, aesthetic, and social qualities. Together the images tell the story of 180 years of photography in the Netherlands and its colonies, from 19th-century daguerreotypes to contemporary works by Rineke Dijkstra, Dustin Thierry, Bertien van Manen, Dana Lixenberg, Lee To Sang, and more. Compiled for the Nederlands Fotomuseum by a committee of five experts, the selected images display the richness of the work of photographers who explore the borders of the medium and are unafraid to challenge them. Starring Chas Gerretsen
Charles (Chas) Gerretsen (1943) is an exceptional photographer. He worked as a war photographer in Vietnam during the late 1960s and was on the scene in 1973 during the coup d?état against President Allende in Chile. Chas Gerretsen is the only Dutch national to have been awarded the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal for courage and enterprise. Later, Chas Gerretsen moved to Hollywood where he photographed stars such as John Travolta. He was also the onƯset still photographer for Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford Coppola?s cinematic masterpiece. In this film, Dennis Hopper plays the role of a war photographer, based on the life of Chas Gerretsen. In 1989, Chas Gerretsen decided to retire from his photographic career. Echoing Events
“Echoing Events” questions the perpetuation, actualization, and canonization of national narratives in English and Dutch history textbooks, wide-reaching media that tendentially inspire a sense of meaning, memory, and thus also identity. The longitudinal study begins in the 1920s, when the League of Nations launched several initiatives to reduce strong nationalistic visions in textbooks, and ends in the new millennium with the revival of national narratives in both countries. The analysis shows how and why textbook authors have narrated different histories – which vary in terms of context, epoch, and place – as ‘echoing events’ by using recurring plots and the same combinations of historical analogies. This innovative and original study thus investigates from a new angle the resistance of national narratives to change.
Surfing the Past
This books discusses one of the most frequently discussed subjects in history education during the last two decades, namely how secondary school pupils use the World Wide Web for their learning activities. Prix de Rome 2017
The publication 'Prix de Rome 2017' presents the work of the four talented young artists that an international jury shortlisted for the Prix de Rome Visual Arts 2017. The nominees are Melanie Bonajo, Rana Hamadeh, Saskia Noor van Imhoff and Katarina Zdjelar. The jury was impressed by the selected artists' innovative attitude, their reflection on the present era and the layered structure of their work. This publication highlights the oeuvres and the new work of the four shortlisted artists. One of the authors, the winner of the stimulation award connected to the Award for the Young Art Critic 2016, is Julia Mullié. With this commission the Prix de Rome also underlines the importance of encouraging a new generation of art critics. The Prix de Rome is the oldest prize for visual artists and architects below the age of 40 in the Netherlands. The purpose of the award is to identify talented artists and to encourage them to further develop and increase their visibility. The winning artist will receive 40.000 euros and a residency in Rome. 'Lezer, er zijn ook Belgen!'
"Twee landen, één taalgebied. De Nederlandse en Vlaamse literatuur horen bij elkaar, maar zijn ze ook één geheel? In 2012 zagen we een toenadering tussen beide literaturen, toen Tom Lanoye het Nederlandse Boekenweekgeschenk schreef. Lanoye trad hiermee in de voetsporen van Hugo Claus, die hetzelfde deed in 1989. Dat jaar was een hoogtepunt voor de Vlaamse literatuur in Nederland. Veel Vlaamse debutanten vonden een Nederlandse uitgever. Lanoye zelf was op dat moment een van de spraakmakende nieuwe Vlaamse namen. Dit boek brengt het succes van de Vlaamse literatuur in Nederland in kaart voor de periode 1980 tot 1995. Aan de hand van onderzoek van literaire kritiek en uitgeverij laat Floor van Renssen zien waar de Nederlandse belangstelling voor Vlaamse literatuur vandaan kwam én wat daarvan de gevolgen waren. Ze schetst het ontstaan van reputaties van auteurs als Hugo Claus en Tom Lanoye, door een samenspel van uitgeverij en kritiek.
