Cognitive Virtual Network Operator Games

This SpringerBrief provides an overview of cognitive mobile virtual network operator’s (C-MVNO) decisions under investment flexibility, supply uncertainty, and market competition in cognitive radio networks. This is a new research area at the nexus of cognitive radio engineering and microeconomics. The authors focus on an operator’s joint spectrum investment and service pricing decisions. The readers will learn how to tradeoff the two flexible investment choices (dynamic spectrum leasing and spectrum sensing) under supply uncertainty. Furthermore, if there is more than one operator, we present analysis of the competition among operators in obtaining spectrum and pricing services to attract users. The brief is designed for professionals working with C-MVNOs. Succinct and practical, it will assist them in making optimal investments and pricing decisions. It will also be of interest to researchers.

Customer panic buying behaviors have been widely observed in recent years, especially when there is supply disruption risk. We study how a profit-maximizing retailer or a welfare-maximizing government can use information design to effectively influence customer behaviors. We use the Bayesian persuasion framework in which the better-informed retailer or government can send persuasive signals to the customers. We derive the information design which can help manage panic buying and under certain conditions lead to a win-win result for the customers and the retailer. We show that the retailer should send signal to reduce panic buying when the supply chain disruption risk is high; however, when t...

Despite their wide deployment, automated agile production (AAP) systems have not yet received enough attention in the existing literature. This thesis work attempts to partially fill this void by studying the planning, design, control and management principles of AAP systems. First, we show that automating a manual machine can dramatically improve system performance if the operator is the bottleneck. On the other hand, when a machine becomes the bottleneck the benefits of further automation are greatly reduced. Second we show that, for push AAP systems, automation is most effective when it is placed towards the end of the line, with the operator giving higher priority to downstream jobs and ...

GE: Good Ending 14

Seiji Utsumi was satisfied with just gazing at his beloved Shou-sempai from afar. But when his classmate, Yuki Kurokawa, finds out about his crush, she pushes him to take action, and his one-sided love starts moving rapidly! During a date, Utsumi and Shou run into Kento, Shou's ex-boyfriend. The two of them leave without talking to him, but later, Kento shows up at Utsumi's school to ask for Shou's contact info. Utsumi refuses, but will that be the end of it...? Meanwhile, Utsumi and Kurokawa are managing to preserve their friendship, but when a new member of the tennis team falls in love with Kurokawa at first sight, the delicate balance starts to get shaken up...!!

This Brief introduces the wireless spectrum market and discusses the current research for spectrum auctions. It covers the unique properties of spectrum auction, such as interference relationship, reusability, divisibility, composite effect and marginal effect, while also proposing how to build economic incentives into the network architecture and protocols in order to optimize the efficiency of wireless systems. Three scenarios for designing new auctions are demonstrated. First, a truthful double auction scheme for spectrum trading considering both the heterogeneous propagation properties of channels and spatial reuse is proposed. In the second scenario, a framework is designed to enable spectrum group secondary users with a limited budget. Finally, a flexible auction is created enabling operators to purchase the right amounts of spectrum at the right prices according to their users’ dynamic demands. Both concise and comprehensive, Auction Design for the Wireless Spectrum Market is suited for professionals and researchers working with wireless communications and networks. It is also a useful tool for advanced-level students interested in spectrum and networking issues.

This brief explores current research on dynamic spectrum auctions, focusing on fundamental auction theory, characteristics of the spectrum market, spectrum auction architecture and possible auction mechanisms. The brief explains how dynamic spectrum auctions, which enable new users to gain spectrum access and existing spectrum owners to obtain financial benefits, can greatly improve spectrum efficiency by resolving the artificial spectrum shortage. It examines why operators and users face significant challenges due to specialty of the spectrum market and the related requirements imposed on the auction mechanism design. Concise and up-to-date, Dynamic Spectrum Auction in Wireless Communication is designed for researchers and professionals in computer science or electrical engineering. Students studying networking will also find this brief a valuable resource.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Covid-19 and the Caribbean, Volume 1

Caribbean countries have had to navigate multiple crises, which have tested their collective resolve through time. In this regard, the region’s landscape has been shaped by an interplay of vulnerability and resilience which has brought to the fore possibilities and contradictions. It is within this context that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic must be considered. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Covid-19 and the Caribbean, Volume 1: The State, Economy and Health provides a comprehensive, multi- and interdisciplinary assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, using the Caribbean as the site of enquiry. The edited collection mobilises critical perspectives brought to bear on res...
