Getaway Guide to Karoo, Namaqualand & Kalahari

A journey into the heart of this vast region suits the explorer; those souls tired of the humdrum of city routine; those who want to discover random yet fascinating things in way out places, taking detours en route. If you are a traveller rather than a tourist, a participant rather than a spectator, you will get the most out of this guide. Yet the area is so large and diverse that it undoubtedly holds something for everyone. With highlights, interesting facts, tips and tons of contacts, written in an easy-to-read style, this is a must-read. Steve Moseley & Brent Naudé live deep in the Karoo where they have spent the past eight years writing and photographing the region. They have developed a great love and respect for its natural and historical heritage, its people and culture, all of which has nurtured in them country values and a simpler way of life. Their work has appeared in national and international magazines and newspapers. Years of travel and research throughout this region have formed the basis of this book.

The semi-desert inland area of Route 62 (including the Winelands, Little Karoo and the Langkloof) and the coastal Overberg offer a mosaic of holiday possibilities. From a tourist's point of view, Route 62 provides an alternative means of getting between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, taking the traveller through towns and scenery very different to that seen on the usual N2 coastal highway. The Overberg, on the other hand, is a compact region of small rural and coastal towns scattered among rolling farmlands and indigenous fynbos, barely an hour's drive from Cape Town. This brand new guide is full of handy and up to date information, covering: Route planning -- how to get there, where to go, what to do and where to eat; Accommodation across price ranges, including self-catering options; Contact details, including e-mail addresses and web sites, of all listed establishments; Detailed maps of each area, including street plans of towns; Nature reserves, touring attractions, and unusual activities and interests; The best places to eat and taste wine.

Timeless Karoo

This vast and unique region, at once awe-inspiring and secretive, will draw you close into its protective mantle; too close for casual inspection by the hurried traveller. The Karoo will share its secrets with you only if you’re prepared to sit quietly to learn its mysteries over a plate of bobotie, a glass of witblits, and a copy of Timeless Karoo. This beautifully illustrated and well-written book encompasses a vast area: the geographical expanse from Niewoudtville in the northwest, eastwards to Hopetown, south to Steytlerville and west to Montagu. Within this region you will encounter six Karoos: the Central, Hantam, Great, Klein, Tankwa and Northern & Upper Karoo, each with its own stockpile of natural and human history, its own complex tapestry and prehistoric rhythms. Each journey into the Karoo yields a fresh view, a different angle and an urge to cut loose, swing off the tar, and pursue an uncharted dirt road into an unknown horizon.
