Handbook of Neuroemergency Clinical Trials, Second Edition, focuses on the practice of clinical trials in acute neuroscience populations, or what have been called neuroemergencies. Neuroemergencies are complex, life-threatening diseases and disorders, often with devastating consequences, including death or disability. The overall costs are staggering in terms of annual incidence and costs associated with treatment and survival, yet despite their significance as public health issues, there are few drugs and devices available for definitive treatment. The book focuses on novel therapies and the unique challenges their intended targets pose for the design and analysis of clinical trials. This v...

This book provides a comprehensive discussion of neurobehavioral issues in stroke. In addition to presenting neurological and neuropsychological studies of cerebrovascular disease, it offers tutorials on the methods of imaging brain structure and measuring metabolism and blood flow. After reviewing the basic biochemical and pathophysiologic aspects of stroke, the authors discuss positron emission tomography, xenon cerebral blood flow, computed tomography of the head, and magnetic resonance imagery. The largest section of the book deals with the clinical and research issues facing professionals concerned with stroke. In particular, localization of function after stroke-induced deficits, stroke-related depression, cerebrovascular dementia, stroke risk factors, and disorders of cerebral vessels are considered. The book ends with discussions of recovery from stroke and of the management of neurobehavioral symptoms.
Among the key issues addressed are new drug discovery, current trial methodology, innovative trial designs, antiepileptic drug evaluation procedures and criteria, and global drug development. The book highlights methods for the extension of clinical trials to pediatric patients, women of childbearing age, the elderly, and patients with new onset epilepsy. In addition, it provides a timely update on newly released drugs in the United States.

Originally published in 1979, the world’s leading researchers contributed chapters describing their work on the orienting reflex in humans. The contributions, at the time current and comprehensive, in a sense that each facet of contemporary research was represented, address the orienting reflex, now recognized as a fundamental component of human learning and cognitive function. The authors contributing to this volume emphasize both theoretical and methodological issues, as well as present more empirical research. Here is a volume that spans all current work on the orienting reflex in humans, both basic and applied, from the laboratory as well as clinical data, and which would be of immense interest to psychologists, psychophysiologists, psychiatrists, physiologists, and all others interested in this fascinating topic.
This volume represents the input of individuals involved in aspects of antiepileptic drug development and discusses how the process can be improved upon and drug evaluation made more effective. Topics range from the theoretical such as ethical issues, to the practical such as study budgets.
