A demonstration of the recursive partitioning methodology and its effectiveness as a response to the challenge of analysing and interpreting multiple complex pathways to many illnesses, diseases, and ultimately death. For comparison purposes, standard regression methods are presented briefly and then applied in the examples. This book is suitable for three broad groups of readers: biomedical researchers, clinicians, public health practitioners including epidemiologists, health service researchers, and environmental policy advisers; consulting statisticians who can use the recursive partitioning technique as a guide in providing effective and insightful solutions to clients'problems; and statisticians interested in methodological and theoretical issues. The book provides an up-to-date summary of the methodological and theoretical underpinnings of recursive partitioning, as well as a host of unsolved problems the solutions of which would advance the rigorous underpinnings of statistics in general.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has developed spacecraft maximum allowable concentrations (SMACs) for contaminants that might be found in the atmosphere within spacecraft during space missions to ensure the health and well-being of astronauts traveling and working in this unique environment. In volume 1 of this series, NASA developed SMACs for 11 compounds: acetaldehyde, ammonia, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, Freon 113, hydrogen, methane, methanol, octamethyltrisiloxane, trimethylsilanol, and vinyl chloride. Volume 2 includes SMACs for 12 more airborne contaminants: acrolein, benzene, carbon dioxide, 2-ethoxyethanol, hydrazine, indole, mercury, methylene chloride, methyl ethyl ketone, nitromethane, 2-propoanol, and toluene. In developing SMACs from the toxicological literature, NASA followed the Guidelines for Developing Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentrations for Space Station Contaminants published in 1992 by the National Research Council.
In Well-Being: Happiness in a Worthwhile Life, Neera K. Badhwar offers a new argument for the ancient claim that well-being as the highest prudential good - eudaimonia - consists of happiness in a virtuous life. Virtue is a source of happiness, but happiness also requires external goods. The Safe Drinking Water Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish national drinking-water standards for chemical and biological contaminants in public water supplies. The standards are to be set at concentrations at which no adverse effects on human health occur or are expected to occur from lifetime consumption, allowing a margin of safety; enforceable standards are standards that are feasible to achieve with the use of the best technology available.
