Partikeln lassen sprachliche Äußerungen grundsätzlich höflicher erscheinen - diese Fama, die viele Konzeptionen der modernen Sprachwissenschaft durchzieht, soll genauer hinterfragt werden. Anhand von Beispielen in verschiedensten Sprachen und unter Einsatz aktueller Theorien und Methoden diskutieren Linguisten den Zusammenhang zwischen Partikeln und Höflichkeit. Dabei zeigt sich, dass dieser weder vom traditionellen Verständnis sozialer Verpflichtung, noch vom pragmalinguistischen Konzept der Konfliktvermeidung her befriedigend erklärt werden kann.
