This book offers an in-depth analysis of musical variation through a systematic approach, heavily influenced by the principles of Grundgestalt and developed variations, both created by the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951). The author introduces a new transformational-derivative model and the theory that supports it, specifically crafted for the examination of tonal music. The idea for this book emerged during a sabbatical at Columbia University, while the content is the product of extensive research conducted at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, resulting in the development of the Model of Derivative Analysis. This model places emphasis on the connections between musical entities rather than viewing them as separate entities. As a case study, the Intermezzo in A Major Op.118/2 by Brahms is selected for analysis. The author's goal is to provide a formal and structured approach while maintaining the text's readability and appeal for both musicians and mathematicians in the field of music theory. The book concludes with the author's recommendations for further research.
This book presents a deep spectrum of musical, mathematical, physical, and philosophical perspectives that have emerged in this field at the intersection of music and mathematics. In particular the contributed chapters introduce advanced techniques and concepts from modern mathematics and physics, deriving from successes in domains such as Topos theory and physical string theory. The authors include many of the leading researchers in this domain, and the book will be of value to researchers working in computational music, particularly in the areas of counterpoint, gesture, and Topos theory.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Mathematics and Computation in Music, MCM 2015, held in London, UK, in June 2015. The 24 full papers and 14 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 64 submissions. The papers feature research that combines mathematics or computation with music theory, music analysis, composition, and performance. They are organized in topical sections on notation and representation, music generation, patterns, performance, similarity and contrast, post-tonal music analysis, geometric approaches, deep learning, and scales.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Mathematics and Computation in Music, MCM 2022, held in Atlanta, GA, USA, in June 2022. The 29 full papers and 8 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 45 submissions. The papers feature research that combines mathematics or computation with music theory, music analysis, composition, and performance. They are organized in Mathematical Scale and Rhythm Theory: Combinatorial, Graph Theoretic, Group Theoretic and Transformational Approaches; Categorical and Algebraic Approaches to Music; Algorithms and Modeling for Music and Music-Related Phenomena; Applications of Mathematics to Musical Analysis; Mathematical Techniques and Microtonality
O objetivo desta obra é demonstrar o alcance do pensamento de Heinrich Schenker no Brasil. O levantamento realizado obedece a três eixos básicos: 1.
Alban Berg: A Research and Information Guide, Third Edition is an annotated bibliography highlighting both the nature of primary sources related to the composer and the scope and significance of the secondary sources that deal with Berg, his compositions, and his influence as a composer. It is a reliable, complete, and useful resource and a starting point for anyone—performer, teacher, student, or scholar—wanting to learn about Berg’s life, works, and cultural milieu. The third edition has 162 additional citations since the publication of the second edition, many arising after the expiration of copyright of Berg’s musical and archival works 2005. Many important new, primary sources of information have appeared, most notably the letter exchanges with his wife, recently published in a three-volume critical edition (in German), as well as letter exchanges with Alma Mahler and Erich Kleiber, and later correspondences with Anton Webern. There has also been a notable increase in the availability of commercial video recordings of Berg's operas, Wozzeck and Lulu.
A new collection by Argentine guitar virtuoso and composer Jorge Morel. This collection features solos by three renowned Latin composers plus two original solo guitar compositions by the author/compiler. All works are in the tango/milonga dance form and are presented in notation and tablature. Selections include: Don Agustin Bardi, by Horacio Salgan; Gallo Ciego, by Agustin Bardi; El Choclo, by Angel Villoldo; and Milonga del Viento and Otro Tango; Buenos Aires, by Jorge Morel. A companion CD featuring Mr. Morel's performance of each solo is included.
A collection of 28 Ernesto Nazareth compositions expertly transcribed for classic guitar solo. One of the major difficulties in trying to arrange Ernesto Nazareth's themes for any instrument, but the piano, is to separate the melodic line from its accompaniment: both are so closely together (that is one of the strongest characteristics of his pianistic style of composition) that it becomes almost impossible to treat one of the features disregarding the other. If one did that, the result would be only a pale and incomplete portrait of what was intended by the composer. That thought has guided us in the making of this book.In spite of the huge obstacles that resulted from the transposition of a...
Walter Rodney is revered throughout the Caribbean as a teacher, a hero, and a martyr. This book remains the foremost work on the region.
